My 1994 Peugeot 306 xtdt has a problem with steering at slow speeds (ie parking)
When you go full lock to the left, upon trying to centre the steering there is sometimes a highly increased resistance. You then feel a pronounced knock and the steering returns to normal. Not sure if it's a problem with the power steering pump or the rack. It doesn't lose any power steering fluid and it doesn't happen evry time.
Any help appreciated.

It sounds as if either a steering or suspension component is very worn and/or bent, and is binding/rubbing. Take the wheels off then get a friend to turn the steering wheel while you look at the mechanisms.

I would also check the thrust bearing on the top suspension mount.
On 306's the spring turns with the steering. This bearing has been know to fail (just good old wear and tear). This inhibits the spring from turning freely, and hence a resistance can be felt.
The only way I know of to check is to have some one turn the wheel whilst viewing the spring (remember safety) to ensure the spring is turning freely. let me know, I have had the suspension apart more times than I would like to remember on these things and have some good pointers.

Had a good check of the steering today.
When turning the wheel I could feel a horrible grinding from the strut top cap on both sides so I think it is these bearings as you say.
Are these part of the suspension strut or can you buy new top bearings on there own? Will the whole strut have to be removed meaning I need spring compressors or is spring tension not released. Any advice/tips appreciated.

macpherson bearings in the top mount, £10 each and generally fail every 60k ish. Easy enough to change, you will need spring compressers, 21mm ring spanner and large alan key. just get the strut out, compress the spring, remove the top mount and break the 2 pieces apart, tap the old bearing free and push the new one in.

Thanks Itchy. Where's the best place to get these bearings from? Will a local motor factors stock them or should I go to somewhere like German Sweedish French?

Changed the bearings today and the steering is now 100%. No knocks on the suspension any more either.
Thanks to everyone for their help/comments.
