The tacho on these cars is driven by a sensor on the flywheel. Its hard to get to, you will need to put the car on axle stands and get underneath to find it. First off, check the 3 pin plug to the immediate right of the fuel filter, this is where the sensor plugs into the loom. If thats ok, the next step would be to blame the sensor. New ones are about £50 from a Pug stealer but you can get the exact same item for about £15 from some of the Peugeot specialists around.

Why not take it back to whoever fitted the engine? The job hasn't been completed, so they should be made to rectify it.

Peugeot sell them for £25. Avoid the equivalents as I wasted £15 quid on one (false economy). These tacho display units are very fussy on the matching TDC sensor.

FYI Solara, there are about 3 different types of sensor, the one I got was the correct one from a factor and was identical even down to the numbers on it to the original when I fitted.
Sounds like you got the wrong one or a dodgy one!
