Can anyone here clarify the requirements for a car to be tax exempt. I always believed it was only vehicles built before a certain date (1974 or 1975 ish) that are eligible for road tax exemption.
However, someone in work has a car for sale that was built in August 1979 and they claim that as of August 2004 the vehicle will be tax exempt because the rules state that once a vehicle is 25 years old its then eligible.
Thanks

The original rule was that 25 year old vehicles didn't pay road tax. Around 1997 the age for zero road tax was frozen. The rule now is that vehicles built before January 1st 1973 are classified as 'historic vehicles' and have a zero rate of raod tax. Note that a vehicle built in '72, but registered later is included in the 'free' category.
Vehicles in the historic category still have to display a current tax disc. It is simply that the rate of duty is zero. It's great producing an insurance cert and MOT and getting a free tax disc for a year!

Thanks JS, I can warn the girl I work with that if she buys it she will unfortunately have to pay the tax :(
Seller is obviously still going on the old rules. Seems a shame because my car would have been coming up for zero rated tax as of next year .....

A certain political party not currently in office has I think undertaken to restore the 25 year rule, but I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.
There are of course other categories of vehicle that are tax-exempt irrespective of date - agricultural vehicles, fire engines, ambulances, and break-down trucks for example, although the rules may have changed for some of these.

Why wouldn't they re instigate it they originated it and the current one A. voted against it at the time and B. Said they'd repeal or freeze it once back in power......

Oh well, back to the post office again every 6 months!! I will have to tell him that his information is incorrect - some unfortuante will end up buying his car only to find they do have to continue paying for road tax.

Ah well, they are politicians, you see. So what they say and what they do are entirely unrelated. Remember the "watch my lips" speach?
The new car lobby are dead against any tax breaks for old cars, and if there is a backlash against the current anti-car movement then they will be riding high after the next election whoever wins. I can't see the classic car sector being high on anyone's priority.
