I fancy getting a secondhand Jag but I am a little worried about repair bills. The Mpg I know isn't great but I won't be doing too many miles.. thinking of a W or x reg or there abouts.

Generally speaking, any Jaguar from the H-registration onwards proves far superior in building quality and reliability to earlier models, thanks to Ford's input.
I know several people who've followed my advice one what to buy in this respect and they've enjoyed many thousands of miles of carefree motoring.
There's no doubt that driving most Jags proves a very classy experience and despite, the age of some of the models, they're still one of the most beautiful cars on our roads.

Have a look in the back of Jaguar monthly, there are quite a few excellent jaguar specialist independants out there, we use a fab one in Bovingdon. Their servicing prices are reasonable (£238 for a 20'000 mile service, compared with an official £460 from our Local jaguar dealer for the same 4 years previously), and the people are good to deal with, all of whome are ex jaguar employees. They use genuine jaguar parts and they have the very latests Jaguar diagnostic equipment, so can deal with even the very latest Jaguars, they also warranty all their work.
IMH Look for something with a highish motorway milage, and a full service history, and you will be laughing, since you will get a brill car for comparitivly very little outlay. We have had ours 97 X300 from 2 years old and 82000 miles, and have had no probs with it(touches wood). Look for as late as you can afford and as high up the spec range as you can i.e. an Executive/Soverign/Daimler V8 as they have much more kit and not a huge price difference at the moment.
A W or X plate does get you out of the way of Nikoseal problems with the AJV8 engine, but a Y/51/02 plate may be in your price range if you look higher up the milage scale. If you are looking at the X308 (XJ8), as Honest John has menitoned in his car by car breakdown the same engine in the S type didn't seem to have as many probs as that in the XJ8.
Once again the MPG can be OK with the AJV8 i.e. up to 29 if you are careful and in the real world is about the same in for both the 3.2 and 4.0 l, but not for the supercharged, which drinks a little more, I am not sure about S type V6's but there seem to be no problems with them.
Have a look at www.chilternltd.co.uk for a start for some good 2nd hand cars, but Jag monthly will give you people nearer you.
hope i have been of some help

All good suggestions, there.
Don't totally ignore your main dealer, for parts & service. They sometimes have promotions for 'free' inspections on older cars. hope to try to get you back into the workshop, after warranty has expired.
& parts prices will surprise you at how reasonable, lots bits are!
Example a few weeks back on S type, a pair of 100k ish base spec, no leather - but from leasing company & spotless main dealer history, in Blackbushe £7000 & £7400. 54k ish leather & more toys £11050. 01 Y reg.
I'm not keen on S type interiors, much prefer XJ!!Had 2 now, both bought at 3 years old, end of lease & other than keeping the second one toooooooo long & started big bills, I'd certainly have another!
allow a few £$£$ for a private plate & nobody knows how new it isn't!
