I know the subject has been touched on before but I was this evening, followed by a Transit with the following occupants:
Driver, Mum with you child on lap, young child on middle seat with younger child on lap.
You guessed it, NO seat belts in use by any of them.
The same people who are going to read, digests and act on the latest how to defend against terror book instructions.
I dispair at times but just drive slower and leave a big space in front. Thats all I can do. I dare not comment such as DO you love your family? Then Belt Up!
Sorry rant over.

I was followed by a white Renault Trafic van a couple of days ago with a woman and several small kids on the front passenger bench. The driver came up really close behind me once or twice (on a winding A-road) then I noticed in my mirror he was deliberately weaving from side to side like F1 drivers do to warm up their tyres. He was laughing and the kids were being flung about. He did this a few times, but in between he was driving erratically as though drunk, brushing the verge and then crossing the white lines.

Cheers, SS

And it's not just White Van Man, is it, Henry? I'd say just about every day I drive I see some sort of idiot in some sort of vehicle with kids obviously unrestrained.

I can*not* understand why the message has still not got through to these people.

In my personal experience, these seem to be the same people who think it's ok for them to have a few drinks before driving too - but I guess that's a totally different subject.

When the gene pool is the size of a puddle - is self-selection such a bad thing?

Mind you, small and not-so-small kids do have a habit of moving about in the back of the car, even if technically belted in.

This is all so sad, and obviously brings about the most cynical comments from law-abiding motorists.

SS yes of course kids have a habit of not staying where they are supposed to stay - but that is a little different to when you see 5 of them in the back of a vehicle, 2 probably on the back parcel shelf (?) and the Mr and Mrs being, as stated in the opening post to this thread, probably the type you would be risking your life by remonstrating with.

You have only to watch some recent offerings on Channel 4 to see prime examles of the kinds of clowns we're talking about. I suggest "Wife Swap", "How clean is your house?" and "You are wat you eat".

Saw a car with male drive, female front seat passenger and small child sat on females lap. No belts and driver on his mobile. maybe he was turning himself in to the authorities?

Not first time, won't be the last and happens all over the world. Imagine the grief and remorse should the worst happened...

Deary me.

A few years ago, my dad's car was rear-ended whilst waiting to turn right into a side road. He got out and discovered that the front seat passenger was a heavily pregnant woman with a small child on her lap and no seat belt. Fortunately the impact speed was low enough not to have caused serious injury but......

The explanation given was that she found it uncomfortable with a seat belt on and that the child wouldn't sit in the back without screaming.

They didn't care but my dad was still shaking hours later.

Another one or two to delete from the gene pool?

White van woman with offspring in or is it on the passenger seat with half of both his legs out of the N/S window. I can only assume his head was on the gear lever.

I was following a saloon in a 30 mph area when I fag was tossed out of the O/S window. Next a King Charles spaniel appeared with half its body out of an O/S window. Oh yes the driver was the only person in it and it was the drivers window that the dog was half in. I followed this idiot for quite a while though traffic lights etc.

How on earth can you make progress with road safety when even the basics are not there?

A few years ago on the M25 a car drew alongside me and maintained its speed (about 60mph) beside me. It was an old Japanese banger, can't remember what. The punk-looking driver appeared to be sitting in the PASSENGER seat, and somehow cotrolling the car as he grinned at me holding up some copies of 'Loot' magazine - I think he was trying to sell me one on the move. I don't think the car was left hand drive, I'm sure I'd have noticed that!

If you allow unrestrained children in your car you should be done for manslaughter or GBH should the worst happen. Sheer stupidity.

Unrestrained anything is bad. My parents used to let the dog sit on the rear seat, only it never sat of course it stood and stuck its head on my mothers shoulder. Accident waiting to happen which it did, my father had to brake hard once and the dog crashed forward and broke my mothers jaw.

They got an estate and a dog guard and it went in the boot after that...
