I m thinking of trading in my peugeot 406 hdi 110,37000 on the clock for a new vitara diesel 3 door..am I mad ?

undoubtedly - unless the Suzuki meets your requirements in a far far far superior fashion to the Pug.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Sectionable, i'm afraid.
If, for some unfathomable reason, you really want a 'soft-roader', the RAV-4 is far superior to the Vitara in every respect.

Actually, even asking the question implies that you are not a true motor head and should be barred from the site until you have repeated the following mantra 1000 times.....
Alfas are great
Alfas are marvellous
Alfas are reliable
But Volvos are best!

The current Vitara diesel uses the same engine as the 406 HDI 110, you should be familiar to the power and torque characteristics. But the Vitara is shaped like a bus in comparison and the gearbox is different ratios. (Apparantly close to 3000 rpm at 70mph compared to around 2500rpm in the PSA)
www.dieselcar.com/ has a review of the Grand Vitara. The interiors have been improved since the review and the spec changed (i.e air con and abs standard)
