greetings! My car has a 4sp automatic box. Earlier on this year (january) i noticed the gears began to slip in gear D, usually around the 2nd or 3rd upshift. I didnt take much notice of it. As time went on the shifting became worst, which i then resorted to using gear 3 for my travels. Gear 3 also started slipping, which i then resorted to using gear 2. Now 6/7 months down the line the car has totally given up (dont blame it). I get no response from any gear what so ever. It just feels like the engine is in neutral no matter what gear i select. I felt a bit brave over the weekend, and got under the car to check the condition of the fluid. I carried out the step by step procedures. When i removed the pan, only a "coke cans" worth of fluid came out and it was very very black. A lot of sludge had settled at the bottom of the pan and the filter (oil strainer) was absolutley filthy. Is it worth me doing a ATF/ATF filter change??? or have i left it too late? any help appreciated

LOL! I think its a bit late for a fluid change, to put it mildly.
You are talking about a complete rebuild here, in fact it may be cheaper to try to get a s/hand 'box.

Maybe, but worth replacing the strainer and refilling with fresh fluid plus a dose of Forte Auto trans treatment. If any improvement noticed then repeat. If the fluid comes out filthy then do it again. If however it wont go then resign yourself for a gearbox change.

forte auto trans treatment?? where is this available and is to be mixed with the ATF when i put new fluid in.

I really wouldn\'t bother. The gearbox is history, the brake bands etc are in the bottom of the box as sludge.
