Im thinking of taking the plunge with my G reg Golf Driver,1.6,and replacing the Pierburg 2E2 carb with a Weber,as I dont want to spend next winter sitting in laybys again, waiting for the dreaded icing symptoms to ease.Any tips on this conversion? Is it a straightforward job?what about the vacuum resevoir?does that need to be connected?and I notice there isnt a place for the manual choke. My mechanic said he hasnt done this particular conversion before, but will give it a go.Any advice on this much appreciated.

I do not know about a conversion but there was a mod to allow the air to be drawn from the exhaust manifold in winter and stop any icing.

I would think very carefully before fitting a Weber conversion.
Despite what many people say, Pierburg carbs are not bad. What they are is difficult to set up properly and few mechanics can do it. There was a mod to get around the icing problem so I would try that first.
I had a Weber carb to a Golf fitted a few years back and it never ran well. In the end I had the old Solex carb put back on.
Also if you do get a Weber put on, you must inform your insurance company as it is classified as a modification.

If you have got carb icing with the Pierburg then you will get icing with the Weber!
Sort that first.
The choke knob position is on the lower dash above your left knee by the way.

Ok Andrew,I hear what you are saying;obviously,I would prefer to solve the carb icing problem rather than spending nearly £300 on buying, and fitting a Weber.I asked Gower and Lee about the problem, and they said it could be either the inlet manifold heater,or the throtle body heater,so how do I get to these components, and how do I test them? Also,do you know anything about this mod for preventing icing, thats been mentioned? What is it,and where can I buy one?!

Tony - is your warm air feed hose in place? I had the same problem on my 1.6 driver, as in it wasnt there! I just bought some aluminium ducting for £3, and bodged it on with a couple of clips. The hose runs from the engine to the air box as far as i can remember (it was a few years ago), thus allowing warm air into the carb on icy days.
You can also get this problem if you have a non standard air filter - a friend installed an induciton kit on his scirroco and had the same problem.

Yes,the warm air feed hose is there, and intact, and the air filter is a standard one.
