HJ advised an owner of a 130bhp VW Golf to keep the engine revs between 2 and 3000rpm to maximise the fuel economy.
Admitedly this was for a six speed gearbox.
I've tried this in my Passat 100bhp 5 speeder.
I found myself driving generally two gears lower than normal.
According to the computer the fuel economy was worse than usual.
What is the reasoning behind the advice?

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

My car has the PD 130 engine and 6-speed gearbox. It's definitely at its most economical when the speed is kept below 2000 rpm and the highest gear possible is used, without labouring the engine.
