Someone I know (and no, it isn't me) has just shown me the coolant tank which six months and 2,500 miles ago, they unknowingly topped up with brake fluid as it was near the minimum. I suggested they quickly get it drained, flushed and refilled. My question on their behalf is what kind of damage will this have done? The car is a 3 year old, 13,000 miles, Clio 1.6 16v petrol (import). It hasn't given any problems at all even since this "incident" which I find strange but I'm no expert. Thanks very much in anticipation.

I remember in the mists of time that a bit of brake fluid in the coolant was recommended for a squeaky water pump.
Presumably- because it did not harm rubber.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

As long as it was drained and flushed out I can't see it would do any damage.
Now putting coolant in the brake reservoir would be different...

It was an expensive way of topping up the coolant!

If it's the expansion tank he put it in, then if its anything like my car none will have been sucked back into the rest of the cooling system.

I have heard of adding brake fluid to coolant to stop a minor leak, never tried it though.

Never heard of that! Oh well, you live and learn!
