been havin trouble for ages now with gearbox/clutch???????.
its really hard sometimes to change into 1st or 4th.also it jumps out of fifth all the time....ive changed the whole linkage cep the gear stick and rollerball at the bottom ,also changed the clutch cable,but still the same,fifth jumps out when clutch is released and i put my footdown on the gas ,just after the bite,sometimes its fine and feels brillant but still jump out of 5th ....the car is a 93 plated gldt 405 ,ive also changed clutch clips at pedal end.

You have a problem with the gearbox.poss selector slip sounds like a recon box wanted.?

bet this is a engine out job ,any idea of prices i should be looking at ,so i dont get ripped off please mech1 or anybody

Sorry dont know the car.I assume its front wheel drive as far as I`m aware gearbox can be taken off without removing the engine.but will need appropriate hoist to adjust engine height while removing box.No idea on price for recon box?.Be carefull though as accidents do happen.would suggest looking at a manual for it if you can get one.

My 2.0i zx has a BE3 gearbox. book time for replacement, quoted to me by a local mechanic, is 2.5 hours. I did it myself, not too bad a job to be honest.

Forgot to mention, recon box from a salvage place in dunstable was £100.

A5 salvage, on the ....A5...., specialise in french cars, they have loads of dismantled parts for sale, of course that may not be very useful if you live far away.

me and a friend were comparing gearboxes and clutchs earlier,we both agreed it was more than likely the clutch pressure plate(we think),so what im gona do is take the engine out,do the clutch while there and back engine hose,im taking into account what ya said mech1 and im gona do the clutch just incase its that as its only 80 quid to buy a clutch from neats automotive(great prices for french spares).if that dont solve it ,then ill get a recon box,im gona change gearbox oil and see if its got metal bits in first,if it has ill do clutch and gearbox to gether,any info from anybody would be a great help.....esp you dl as youve solved many a problem for me ,many thanks lads

The only problem I have with it being pressure plate is all gears would be affected.1st runs through the layshaft.4th is direct through mainshaft.interesting to find out what it is though let us know.

youve got me thinking now,only real solution is to get the engine out ,replace clutch(easy bit)then replace gear box with a recon box and hope,coz i must admit ,i do love the 405 coz it drives well nice and smooth,best drivabilty car ive ever had,shame init

Probably the best approach - put some time aside to sort it all out in one go. Might be ideal time to change cambelt also if you drop the engine - difficult in-situ due to engine mount and lack of space available.
Nice car the 405, once sorted out they are great, don't rust much. Bottom ball joints on the front suspension legs are a weak point causing clonking noises, I got both mine fixed when I once owned a 1988 1.9 GTX.
