OK, a challenge for the Anoraks out there...
Which model of car, available in the UK has had the largest number of engines fitted as standard?
Capacity, no. of cylinders, turbocharged or not, all to be included as seperate engines.
The Ford Granada MKIII (inc. Scorpio) must be a hot contender.
Reach for the back issues...
|
after extensive research in the imagos vaults i'm sure the 1985-1998 Granada nee Scorpio had these at various times..
1.8 inline 4 cylinder single cam
2.0 inline 4 cylinder single cam
2.0 twin cam 4 cylinder
2.3 twin cam 4 cylinder Cosworth
2.4 V6 ohv
2.5 diesel
2.8 V6 ohv
2.9 V6 ohv
2.9 V6 24v Cosworth
That's 9, i think thats it?
|
OK, bear with me here, coz I don't have time to fully research this, but I *think* the Alfa 156 has that beat.
1.8 petrol
2.0 petrol 150bhp
2.0 petrol 155bhp
2.0 JTS petrol 170bhp (I think, defo a different engine anyway)
2.5 V6
Did the 3.0 V6 make it into the 156?
3.2 GTA
There will be a 3.5 GTAm I think too, don't think it's here yet though
and there might have been a 1.6 petrol, not sure
There have been at least 3 different 2.4 JTD's (135, 150 & 175 bhp)
and I'm pretty sure the 1.9 JTD was put in the 156 in at least one form.
On the other hand, it seems unlikely that the Granada never had a diesel engine, so do you need to add some to your nine?

it's there in list in fact there was 2 types Ford's own turbo diesel up to 1994 then one manufactured by VM of Italy from '94 onwards so that makes 10.
|
Oh right... 2.5 diesel was a diesel, was it? *hangs head in shame*
Sorry, I managed to miss that somehow.
SO if you're on ten, it depends on the ones I wasn't sure about whether the Alfa beats it or not.
|
Hmmmm.. now the 1982-1992 Sierra had....
1.3 OHC 4 cylinder '83-84 only.
1.6 OHC 4 cylinder
1.8 OHC 4 cylinder (pinto based)
1.8 OHC 4 cylinder (CVH)
1.8 turbo diesel
2.0 OHC 4 cylinder
2.0 twin cam 4 cylinder
2.0 16v Cosworth turbo
2.3 V6 ohv
2.3 diesel
2.8 V6 ohv
2.9 V6 ohv
=12.
any errors or omissions.. i apologise.

How about the previous generation Mercedes E-Class (1995-2002)?
During its life it had:
E200 2.0 petrol 4 cylinder 136bhp
E200k 2.0 petrol 4 cylinder 163bhp (supercharged)
E230 2.3 petrol 4 cylinder 150bhp
E240 2.4 petrol V6 170bhp
E240 2.6 petrol V6 170bhp
E280 2.8 petrol 6 cylinder 193bhp
E280 2.8 petrol V6 202bhp
E320 3.2 petrol 6 cylinder 220bhp
E320 3.2 petrol V6 225bhp
E36 3.6 petrol 6 cylinder 272bhp (supercharged?)
E430 4.3 petrol V8 279bhp
E55 5.5 petrol V8 354bhp (supercharged?)
E220CDi 2.2 diesel 4 cylinder 125bhp
E220CDi 2.2 diesel 4 cylinder 143bhp
E250D 2.5 diesel 5? cylinder 113bhp
E300D 3.0 diesel 6? cylinder 136bhp
E300DT 3.0 diesel 6? cylinder 177bhp
E320CDi 3.2 diesel 6? cylinder 195bhp
Of course there is also the Brabus EV12 with a 7.3 V12 but I'm not sure that was ever available in a MB showroom...
|
Nice one rjr.
18! That'll take some beating...
|
|
for the record the E36 and E55 AMG where not supercharged, only the current E55 is (same basic engine with a compressor) not sure that I recal a 200k either, maybe the 230k unit for the c class/SLK ?

For a car still in production, the Citroen Xsara has had a fair few engines from 98-2004:
1.4 8v
1.6 8v
1.6 16v 110HP
1.8 16v
2.0 16v 136HP
2.0 16v 167HP (VTS)
1.9 NA Diesel
1.9 TD Diesel
1.4 HDi 70
2.0 HDi 90
2.0 HDi 110
If you include the Picasso variants, then you can add the 1.6 HDi 110 to that list.

Compare and contrast with the Saab 96.
Twenty year run 1960 - 1980.
three cylinder 841cc
V4 1498cc
(no wonder they made less money than Abba)

CLio doesn't do badly 1.5dci 65 1.5 dci 80 1.5dci 100

>> CLio doesn't do badly >> 1.5dci 65 >> 1.5 dci 80 >> 1.5dci 100 >> surely these are the same engines? just got diffrent management thingys.
Sameengine code but they are different the 80 has different injectoris and pump and ECU abd an intercooler over the 65 and the 100 has its fair share of uprated stuff and different turbo and injectors and pump again.

|

Yes, but they still count, as they have different power outputs...
|
|
|
|
(no wonder they made less money than Abba)
Saabs sound better though.
|
Especially the 3-cylinder 2-stroke!
IIRC, they also made a rally version with two of those engines bolted together (although possibly doesn't count as a production model). I'd love to have heard it, though...
|
Eric Carlsson with his Saab in the '60's was a rally superstar.
|
Mk1 Corsa had a few..
1.0 12v
1.2 8v
1.2 16v
1.4 8v (60bhp)
1.4 8v (82bhp)
1.4 16v
1.6 16v
1.5 D
1.5 TD
1.7 D
|
And the 91-98 Astra...
1.4 8v (60bhp)
1.4 8v (82bhp)
1.4 16v
1.6 8v (70bhp)
1.6 8v (75bhp)
1.6 8v (100bhp)
1.6 16v
1.8 8v
1.8 16v
2.0 8v
2.0 16v
1.7 D
1.7 TD
|
1.6 8v (70bhp) 1.6 8v (75bhp)
what's the diffrence/point? (apart from 5 bhp)
probably the same diffrence between 2.8/2.9 scorpio i suppose..
|
I'm making a note of the list winners and avoiding them like the plague - imagine the scene at a main dealer parts counter, asking for which engine derivative is fitted before providing the part (usually small and overpriced), whilst consulting micro-fiche and VIN numbers. Makes you wish for the old days - 1.3 A series one size fits all...
|
|
|
IIRC, they also made a rally version with two of those engines bolted together (although possibly doesn't count as a production model). I'd love to have heard it, though...
the two 3 cylinder engines were mounted transversly, ahead of the front axle, which made it a bit difficult to steer !
IIRC from an article in the SAAB owners club magazine many years ago, it was known as 'The Beast', still exists in the museum at the Trollhattan factory, and perhaps not unsurprisingly, only ever had one outing on the proving ground. The test driver was 'reluctant' to have a second go
|
|
|
Saabs sound better though.
had 2 96 V4s and it is absolutely compulsory to replace the standard exhaust with the Jetex Sports exhaust. Then you can make music !
