Jeep Grand Cherokee - Andy Paul
I am looking into buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the near future. Does anyone have any advice regarding any known problems with these vehicles. I will be looking at either a late shape(1999 onwards) 4.7L V8 or possibly an earlier 4.0L straight six. I need something capable of towing a car & trailer, with an automatic gearbox and some reasonable luxury.

A few years ago I would not have considered buying a vehicle such as this but due to the state of the roads, increasing numbers speed bumps, a bad back and a dodgy left leg I am not left with many alternatives.

Many thanks

Andy
Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee - Nick Ireland
I am no expert but over the years I have seen a lot of information/warnings about towing with an automatic. Many comments are to the effect that the whole thing is not a good idea (strain on the gearbox) and others have said that, at least, you may have to fit a supplementary cooler for the ATF fluid. Maybe this vehicle is suitable for heavy duty towing but maybe not ,as an auto. Please check it out - you don't want a burnt out auto box ££££££!!!!!

Had problems with the a/c evaporator under the dash. In the US they have had to extend warranty to 7 years, but no sign of it over here. I have already seen failures in UK, and it's £1000 to fix. Make sure it has a long warranty and it covers a/c. You'll be OK towing with auto, just make sure you change the fluid every couple of years (and when you get it).

Have you thought about a Land Cruiser or Ford Explorer? Explorers are real cheap at the moment, and whilst they haven't had a great deal of good news, htey're a pretty sturdy old thing.
Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee - ROBIN
You need one of these things for THE ROADS?
Surely not,not even in Ireland.
I also have a bad back, which is currently having one of its protests, but if the protests were permanent something like a Picasso would be entirely adequate.

A Picasso!!!!!

You must be joking I want to be able to tow a car & trailer. Did you actually read all of my post?

My requirements are an automatic gearbox, a luxury interior(big, comfortable leather seats, air con, decent sound system) and a big engine.

Now think very carefully and see if you can make any sensible suggestions.

Andy

ps please do not take offence. This is all meant to be good, clean sarcastic fun :-)
Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee - ROBIN
Further to my Mpv idea, what is wrong with an Audi,Merc,Bmw estate, with the biggest engine you can get?
You lose all that adipose engineering and gain build quality (in spades if we're talking against Jeeps) and Clarse, dearie.
You got sumfin against quality'n clarse?
