But why can I not buy (from the DVLA site) an E or F prefix cherished plate??
From the DVLA site:
When will the E and F prefix be available to purchase?
A date for the release of the E & F prefix has yet to be confirmed. If you would like to be notified of any further developments please e-mail us at som.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk.
When will the Q prefix be available for sale?
We plan to release Q registrations (in the 1 to 20 figure range) some time next year. A precise date is not available at present but further information will be available on this site nearer the time. If you wish to be kept informed please e-mail us at som.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk

I used to have a Q number on my tractor, issued because the original number had rusted away and become untraceable. Then a couple of years ago this was withdrawn by the DVLA and replaced with an appropriate number for its year, 1949.

how can this be? Year identifiers wern't introduced until 1963?
|
So it would have a plate without a year identifier then... still appropriate for its age.
(Incidentally, re-issued plates like this are not transferrable. Many pre-1963 cars that had their original plates transferred were given 'A' plates but these have often now been replaced with non-transferrable, ageless ones.)

Fair enough, but WHY have they held back the E & F plates?
|
......There still still money to be made from the A to D yet?

A-D 1-21 are still held back. I'm waiting release of a B21 plate and have been informed that when it is released it will go to auction. DVLA will contact me when that happens.

Dont tell me this is going on the oregano flavoured italian chip fryer?
|
So something which is supposed to convey information is turned into another money-making scheme, this time, it's a stealth tax on vanity.

I have seen loads of B6 ***, B7 *** and B8 *** so the comment you make is incorrect.

Thank you for your succinct response. I was basing this on my recollections of a search of the DVLA website about 12 months ago and the subsequent email correspondence with the Swansea mafia from when I last looked for the plate I was interested in.
I naturally offer my heartfelt and abject apologies for any inconvenience and distress this error may have caused to any Backroomers. If there is any way in which I may make amends, please let me know.
To ensure this kind of sloppiness is not repeated I shall in future conduct a full and extensive search* of the interwebbernet before posting on all such matters of national importance.
I remain you most humble servant,
No Dosh.
(* just such a search confirms that my memory ain\'t wot it used to be, guvnor. In fact ONLY B1-20 are available direct from DVLA. It\'s 21 that hasn\'t been released. Oh how my face reddens.....)

First the foglights, now this, I really am starting to enjoy my daily dose of ND self flagelation and penitence. Its most refreshing

Following your comment yesterday regarding a little after-dinner entertainment, I shall be wary of all Laguna drivers for the foreseeable future......

I was wondering if my number plate on the old Ford was worth anything.
E followed by a number less than 32 and letters that could be easily some ones initials.
Perhaps filling the tank does not double its value after all ?
Or perhaps I am wishful thinking again.
