I am thinking about buying a car at Blackbushe auction on Monday. Does anybody have any idea how much it would cost to have it transported to the south coast (Bournemouth), or alternative suggestions on how to get it home. I am not willing to take the risk of driving it uninsured, which it would be as I doubt it will be taxed.

I'm not clear why you think you can't get it insured, over the phone within a few minutes of buying it. I got instant cover for a motorbike - I think it was with Norwich Union Direct. Or your existing insurer might let you extend your cover to two vehicles temporarily.

I didn't think insurance was normally invalidated by not having a tax disk. Indeed, you can't get tax without insurance, so the insurance has to start first.

I bought a car at auction recently- the sale was in my wife's name as the car was a replacement for her car, kindly written off by our (teenage)daughter. I drove it home under my own policy and was covered for third party (traffic act) cover only- ie. I would have lost the price just paid for the auction car if I'd wrecked it on that journey but the journey was only five miles of country roads. Phoned my wife's insurers when we got home and had fully comp cover transferred from the written off car there and then. Not being taxed does not invalidate insurance.

I think if you read the policy carefully, there is a clause that the owner has to have a valid insurance in place and that you drove illegally.

A friend and I had two cars each a while back, and we hit on the idea of him putting his spare car in my name and vice versa. We could each then drive our second car as 'a car not owned by me'. A solicitor friend checked it out for me and it wasn't legal - we were each covered to drive a car not owned by us, but only if there was a valid policy on the car by someone else.

How does comprehensive cover 'any vehicle driven with owner's permission' work in these circs? As the new owner you can give yourself permission. Or are you not the owner until DVLA has been informed?

From memory any vehicle in those instances is defined as "any vehicle not owned by the policy holder and not hired to him under a hire purchase agreement" or something like that.

Ownership starts when ownership starts, nothing to do with the DVLA or the Registration Document.

My MoreThan policy says:- (My bold text) - note spouse.

B YOUR COVER WHILE DRIVING ANY OTHER CAR
This policy also covers you against claims for costs you may have to pay as a result of:
* causing injury to or the death of anyone; or
* the damage you cause to another person?s property (we will pay up to £20,000,000 for any claim or claims arising from one incident). You are covered while driving any other car only if all the following apply:
* You are 25 years of age or older.
* You are driving with the owners permission.
* You are not entitled to make a claim for the damage under any other policy of insurance.
* The car is not owned by (or hired under a hire purchase agreement by or leased to) you or your husband or wife.
* The car is being driven in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Please anyone correct me if wrong. If a vehicle is not taxed it also is not insured whether you have insurance or not.and also MOT is void.or is it No MOT void insurance.I thought it was both?

Tax does not affect the validity of your insurance. Neither, usually, does an MOT.

The car must be roadworthy, but there are few insurance companies who insist on an MOT. Makes your life a whole bunch easier if you do have one thoug.

I've done this, phoned Direct Line and outlined the circumstances - they have just told me "no problem, you're insured, tax it as soon as the docs come through from us".

I'm sure any insurer would say similar.

BCA charge for delivery according to distance. They undercharged me delivering from Preston to Wokingham (they charged for Workington!) and it was somewhere around £200 IIRC. Easiest is to call them and ask, or go to the window when you get there and ask.

I've used their delivery twice, and it's always been pretty prompt. The downside is, of course, that you don't get any opportunity to drive the car at all on day of purchase, so if you find a problem it is too late to do anything about it, under the limited rights which you have under certain auctions.

Having said that, I have never experienced a problem. Depends to some degree what you are buying, and which auction.
