Exhaust back box - '89 Mk4 Escort 1.3 - mfarrow
Hi

The end pipe has come away (at the seam) from the back box on my Escort.

Anyhow, my question is, is it worth replacing it with a genuine Ford part, or are KwikFit, etc. as good?

Cheers

Depends on how much you pay and how long you want it to last.

QF offer cheap ones: probably last 2-3 years.. BUT you can make them last longer by afterfitting coating all welded seams in heat resistant paint.

OR they will fit a more expensive one .. but may not have in stock.. which may last 4 years..

Being the back box, it will always be damp inside mixed with the nice combustion acids. The back box is always going to go at some regular intervals, so buy it as cheap as you can.

I have the same car - well, the 1.4 version. Took two guys with oxy-acetaline torches at Kwik Fit nearly an hour to get the old one off and new one on (well seized). It's lasted 3 years and 40,000 miles so far, with no sign of trouble.

£19 all in. Absolute bargain IMO.

Perhaps the Ford part will last 2 years longer - but do you expect the rest of the car will still be OK in 3 years' time? (Don't expect mine will.)

Cheers,
Mark

Hmmm, that is the ultimate question!

I'm pretty sure it will last longer, it's been garage stored after each use for the past 12 years! I have to say I am impressed at how long the old box lasted, if it's been on the car from new, and the car has only ever done short runs (56k miles on the clock now).

Thanks for the advice about siezing, I'll have a go at taking the old one off it's joint before I buy a new one, in case it's beyond my skills :-)

Hi

I've given up on the ford idea, never realised how tightly bolted on exhausts were, not helped by the fact that when you try bashing a section off the whole lot just wobbles on the mountings!

Booked it in to Kwik-Fit tommorrow morning.

Thanks for the help!

Kwik-fit used to offer the option of a 1 or 3 year warranty;it was the same exhaust system-they just charged extra if you wanted the 3 year one.

No offer of a 3yr warranty, though the back box comes with a 2tr guarantee, so I'm not complaining :-)

They also have a guarantee of replacing brake pads when they wear out for as long as you own the car! Not bad food for thought...
