I can do ABS - my new car even has it, must try it one day.
EBD, BEETLE, ETC? What are the rest of these things, please?
|
EBD - Egregious Backroom Dilettante?
|
Latin Egregius 'illustrious', literally 'standing out from the flock'.
A quick search on the internet gives Emotional Behavioral (sic) Disabilities/Disorders; Easton's Bible dictionary; Ecole de Bibliothécaire Documentaliste; e_business Distribution, Chile.
Please somebody put me out of my misery, as these all look a bit off-car topic.

Quite enjoying all the amusing suggestions actually, but I can't think of any myself, so I suppose I'll have to chip in with the correct term:
Electronic Brake Distribution
Basically an advanced form of ABS, putting the braking effort onto the wheels which are showing least sign of locking.
|
EBD often also puts maximum braking effort in if it detects emergency braking. It follows Merc's discovery that in an emergency drivers often applied max braking effort intially but then unconciously lifted slightly. To get the best out of ABS, you need to keep hard on the brake pedal.
Thus, its also known as the
OMG HOW CLOSE IS THAT WINDSCREEN???????
system.

Sorry Mr P, you have to add another one in here. its EBA that throws maximum power into the braking system - Emergency Brake Assist. So for the brakes you can have
ABS + EBA + EBD

Wow!

Really looking forward to buying one of these cars when it's 15 years old...
|
ESP = Electronice Stability Program
Links the traction control with the ABS....
|
I thought it was clever to give a car Extra Sensory Perception - prevent accidents before they even happen.
To be honest, 'ESP = Electronic Stability Program Links the traction control with the ABS....' sounds like gobbledegook to me!
|
I hate to tell you this, mapmaker, but Merc has developed "pre-safe". I don't think it prevents accidents before they happen but it does try to minimise the effect of them by taking action before the accident happens.
Thus, if your suitably equipped S class senses that you are about to hit something, the electric seats sit you up to make best use of the airbags & the windows/sunroof shut to stop things coming in.
A Cayenne with air suspension will also put the suspension in its harder mode if you brake hard.
|
So if a pigeon flies overhead and is about to drop some guano on your head, the sunroof will shut?
I'm REALLY looking forward to having one of these as a 'classic' car!
|
.....and of course instantly puts the seats into "commode" mode, to allow for discharge of bodily waste... ;o)
|
Now then as everyone knows Hondas aren't the only cars to have ABS and EBD, most other modern cars have it as well, I just happened to be driving an Accord at the time, if I had been driving a Mondeo or a Passat, then I would have been mentioning them instead. I was writing more about these systems in general than trying to blow the trumpet for any particular car.
Anyway, positive things about Alfa.... We sold a 156 the other day and it hasn't been back in for some annoying minor fault yet, and nearly an entire week has passed, things are certainly looking up for Alfa. :-)
And I don't spend all day on the internet, mainly because the garage does not normally use computers for any day to day sales work, hence if I want the internet, I have to use it in the manager's office! :-( Believe it or not, we still fill out *all* paperwork by hand, nothing at all is compterised!

mapmaker,
Hopefully, by the time these cars are 15 years old, driving standards will be such that they will be obsolete, due to increased driver (as opposed to car) expertise?
Dreaming again...

It's not just the ABC, DEF, GHI, JKL, MNO, PQR, STU, VWX, YZA features described above, it's the ZYX, WVU, TSR, QPO, NML, KJI, HGF etc. etc. as well. Like the 'automatic headlight switch on' device on the new megane.
|
I'd like to think that driving standards would improve too, but I think we all know that isn't gonna happen without some huge investment in the testing system!
Normally I don't need to use anything like that on a car, it was just a foolish mistake, which fortunately I learned from without having to crash first! In the past I have manually cadence braked to try and get round a corner whilst stopping sharply and the results were far less impressive. ;-)

matt - (assuming your post is not TIC) it is fairly clear that driving standards cannot improve as drivers will be expecting their cars to take over more responsibility from them. I'm not advocating the steering-wheel spike idea, but you know what I mean.

Blue Oval? is this not a very bad moniker for a Honda sales person?
Can we think up a new handle for Blue please?
|
Lol! :-)
Well, Red H wouldn't be a bad one, but I was thinking of just changing it to Blue, that way it isn't linked to any particular brand and I won't ever need to change it again, and erm, hopefully I won't need the Brown Trousers name again, that was a one off!
The Blue Oval name isn't the worst bit though, I still drive the Fiesta to work and have even opened it up to show some of my customers who were looking at Jazz and Fiestas what the interior of the Fiesta is like. That way I save them from having to make the trip to the Ford garage, aren't I kind? ;-)
