One of my relatives has recently ordered a new mark V , vw golf, 1.4, 90bhp FSI. I have read the comment by HJ about the launch in the UK may be delayed cos these petrol engines depend on 100% sulphur free petrol. As the car will be used in Germany and the UK has anyone heard of any problems? Is there any UK petrol which would be OK ? Grandad.

I suggest that, if the car is going to have a 3 year parts and labour warranty, they won't be releasing it until the fuel is available and/or the engibe is modified to take what is sold in UK and, in any event, there will be some note in the handbook, saying what fuel is to be used.

The manual for my 1.6 FSI says its OK to use ULSP, but you will get an economy hit (it has to purge the cat more regularly). The car prefers 97 RON fuel though.

I've just ordered a 1.6FSI SE Golf so am very interested in this.
What brands of fuel are OK or indeed best? Should you stay away from supermarket fuel and only use something like Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate?
In the brochure (not manual) it says:
"Thanks to the knock control, unleaded 4 star (at least 95 RON) can be used instead Super Plus unleaded. In order to achieve maximum fuel consumption benefits on the FSI engine, Ultra Low Sulphur Petrol must be used"

I would be very wary of using information in a brochure as your backup if things went pear shaped. I suggest you get official information supplied by VW UK rather than rely on a brochure. As there is always the get out clause "errors & ommissions ommited" and data is subject to change on the brochure.

My 1.6 FSI has had nothing but supermarket petrol in it from new (6 tanks). 95RON is fine, providing you don't labour the engine. 97RON is better (engine is more flexible and feels quicker). Its too early to compare fuel economy yet between the two. As far as Ultimate/Optimax is concerned, BP Ultimate is 97RON with extra additives, Optimax is 100+? Both are ULSP, so wont give much benefit over "normal" 97RON, unless the advertising is correct.
As far as the technical manual from the car is concerned, from memory it says ULSP is OK, but Zero Sulphur is needed to get full economy benefits. 98 RON is specified, but 95RON is OK with some performance loss.
I just hope ZSP becomes available next year as proposed!
Hope this helps,
Joe

I have a Mitusbishi GDI engine in my car, which is also a petrol direct injection engine, similar in concept to the FSI.
These engines are reputed to thrive on higher quality petrols, and use a different type of catalyst compared to multi-point injection petrols.
GDI engines need to been driven hard to stay clean and working well, and mine has 67k of motorway miles. It is fine with standard fuel from Shell/BP.
UK oil refineries (there's only about 3 left!) are being upgraded to supply ULSP fuels. So in conclusion:
1) there will be a better choice of fuels in time
2) the car would benefit from a premium fuel...
3) but probably unnecessary unless you do a lot of short journeys at low average speed.
Regards,
Tim
