This is well worth a read, about a woman who frequently rides the roads around Chernobyl!
Amazing (+ chilling) story - THe Growler
Extreme indeed. Some lady. I've posted the link on my biker forum.

Did you get this from my post on AO PR? Or is it just quite a freaky coincidence?
For what it's worth, chilling is exactly the description I gave too. A very interesting read, but left me feeling somewhat freaked out.
That picture from the top of the tower block was quite awe-inspiring.
Can't actually remember where I foudn the link in the first place now.
Amazing (+ chilling) story - martint123
I think just about every newsgroup, forum, webboard has had the link by now.
Amazing (+ chilling) story - BazzaBear {P}
I've remembered now, got it from an Aston Martin forum. And of course PR won't have got it from there, since they apparently 'look like Ford Capri's'. There's no helping some people ;)

she must be bonkers !
fair play to her, i remember looking at a ghost town, its on the far right hand side of cyprus, it is on border of cyprus and the turkish side. cant remember the name, but everyone left there in 1970, clothes and stuff still hang from rails in shops. would love to go there, but they reckon its booby trapped.
still not as exciting as coming back "glowing " tho !

Cyprus - The city is Famagusta (think that's spelt correctly)
Amazing (+ chilling) story - AngryJonny
There is apparently an interesting ghost-town in the good ol' US of A:

www.offroaders.com/album/centralia/centralia.htm

Centralia Pennsylvania, caught fire years ago, still burning.
Amazing (+ chilling) story - John R @ Work {P}
It was July 1974.

I was posted to Cyprus in September 1974 and was stationed within sight of Famagusta for 2.5 years. Could never go there though.

Motoring link = I passed my driving test in Larnica (1975)

it is possible to visit famagusta with a bit of help from friend serving with the U.N. they can get passes to go into famagusta , a very strange place but a few people still live there only a handfull or so as officially they are not supposed to be there you can wander around but you can't touch anything and you cant take pictures which is a shame but it,s not unknown for U.N. perssonel to bring back souveniers it is risky though you also cant enter any property , still nice to see in a strange way.

what a very moving and incredible story thank you for posting the link.

wow that was so interesting I forgot to go and buy lunch.

I love motoring in the countryside, but it is hard to imagine what that would be like if the countryside itself was dangerous to life.

Yes thanks for the link, I'd returned to HJ to browse around the site and got engrossed in this (slow connection, took for ever) I've passed it on to some friends too. It's just amazing and really made me think.

One of the most chilling drives i've been on is from Zagreb to Dubrovnik in Croatia in about 1998(?) not long after the troubles, in a Hertz fiat punto with a wheel bearing on the way out.

Driving through loads of ghost villages with houses where people had just been forced out leaving belongings spread around, most of the houses were burnt out shells peppered with bullet holes. 90% of the road signs were peppered with bullets and occasionally you had to drive on the wrong side of the road cos the road was chewed up by tank tracks. Very eerie. We took the coast road back again!

Emphasises in these days of terrorism and nuclear power stations what an unsafe world we live in. Hundreds of years before it becomes habitable again...
One of my daughters takes in two Belorussian boys for a few weeks organised by her Church each year. They are about 11 and 9 and such well behaved and hardworking lads even for their age.
They get hospital and dental checks whilst they are over here. However she tells me they are unlikely to last past their late twenties due to radiation. They live out in the middle of nowhere and are so absolutely amazed at the consumer goods and standards of living here that it makes you feel guilty.
Regarding Cyprus we travel there regularly and are going next week. In November a fiend who runs a bar told me that the border between North and South is virtually over now and travelling between is becoming commonplace. Never tried it myself previously but may give it a try.
One reason is that my mates wife is Greek Cypriot and would go mad if I even suggested I was going. Feelings still run very deep particularly from the older ones who were turned out of the North overnight.
Amazing (+ chilling) story - THe Growler
That "fiend" who runs a bar must be the one whose establishment in Paphos the lady country sales manager of the company I used to work for introduced me to Keo beer and ouzo shooters. And I drove back to Nicosia the same night....
Amazing (+ chilling) story - wemyss
No no Growler. That must be a different fiend.. This one is in Limassol and insists on my drinking an half bottle of Keo 12 year VSOP and regularly threatens to have me shot by EOKA B when I say enough....
Amazing (+ chilling) story - Welliesorter
I e-mailed this to a friend last week and he told me he'd already seen it discussed on Slashdot.org. Part of the discussion centred around whether the woman was more at risk from radiation or from a random incident (eg motorcyle accident).

Amazing (+ chilling) story - Pugugly {P}
Mentioned this to a BBC friend. Apparantly there has already been a TV documentary on it !
