Rusty KIA Sedona - volvoman
During my many internet searches whilst considering which MPV to buy I came across several posts from disgruntled owners commenting on rust and poor paint quality on the Hyundai Trajet. I beileve Hyundai own Kia and, if so, similar problems with the Sedona make sense. Can't recall which sites the comments were posted on however - sorry HJ :(

Dont get me wrong, when it comes to rugged reliable, cheap motoring then hyundai and kia win hands down.

But paint work quality is dredful and rust is appauling. My accent is 3 years old and coated in the stuff. Every single bracket, screw, bolt and clip under the bonnet needs replacing already and ive already spotted rust under the wings.

Beware! or get it rust-proofed when you buy it.

Sorry Davey, but rugged and cheap are not words which spring to mind when describing a car which fall to pieces after a few years. Would you have called the dear old Alfasud rugged?

I would disagree. The Hyundai's are reliable, but from my extensive research into Kia's, they are a lot of rubbish in terms of quality, reliability and durability compared to toyota, nissan and hyundai. This is not my own opinion, it is based on what owners have said over many pages from the net.

Kia's can even be worse than the older alfa romeo's!

hang on

kia rio and hyundai accent are the same chassis? i thought kia got all the hyundai hand me downs (exception of the new city car), and with the accent being a relatively old model and poor safety, hyundai where happy to share the platform with there sub kia.

What would be the main component differences between the accent and rio? seem to share quite a few basic ones?

The Rio is an O.K car. Even so, there are many unhappy customers with this car who go as far to say: it is a piece of junk. One owner says they are a death trap. Even though this may be an exageration, it is always worth listening to what car owners say. Take this example of what someone said: (www.c********.org/review_43423.html)

(This had to be removed because it directly quotes something that carsurvey regards as its copyright. HJ 12-6-2012)

There are quite a few unhappy owners and in my opinion, I would stay away (unless it is a freinds one or is veyr cheap).

HJ's road tests of the Kia Magentis and Sorento (see link on top RH) suggests that they are both competent, well made cars and excellent value for money. IMO the Sorento looks better than many 4X4/SUVs at twice the price.

I would imagine its too soon to tell about long term reliability or longevity though......

Chad.

With Chad's comments, yes, the Sorento and Magnetis are very good cars from what I have read. But some Kia's aren't. I may have generalised a little with my earlier comments. I should have really said that some Kia's are excellent whilst some are lemons, which is true with most other cars. It really depends which one we are talking about.

Makes me wonder if there is some way to establish the "lemon rate" for a manufacturer? Seems to me there are some (eg Kia) where you stand a reasonable chance of getting a good car for the money but have to take a risk that yours was built in a Jif-fy (sorry)

Magentis is selling very well in the US and Canada (where its known as the Optima). It think its made in a different factory to the other Kias, though.
Similarly, the Hyudai Sonata sells well in the US. I know someone in this country who bought one four years ago - covered a big mileage and only fault was that the idle air valve needed replacing.
