I understand how internal comustion engines and the 4 stroke cycle, but is there a site out there that explains and names more of the components of the engine?
For instance i've heard people talk of big end shells, but I still have no idea what they are!

big end shells are the replaceable bearings which fit between the crankshaft journal and the big end of the con-rod.

Any Haynes manual will help here. Not only will you find the terminology but here will be photos and exploded views. Also you will find that about 99% of you engine will never need any attention if treated properly. I think modern manuals have deleted the strip down section for gearboxes because practically no-one ever uses them anymore. It's just more ecconomic to find a replacement unit.

As a student having to rely on cars such as the Mark 1 Cortina, it was a great introduction to mechanical engineering. Almost got thrown out of my digs for rebuilding the engine in my room and using the kitchen scales to balance the pistons ;-)

Try this: auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm
Doesn't tell you what big-end shells are, though.
