Had car serviced last Saturday, and also had new front brake discs and pads fitted.
After 450 miles of mostly motorway driving, braking not-too-hard in order to run in the new brakes, last night i got a very distinct burning smell coming into the car after braking (again not-too-hard) for a roundabout. Upon stopping for inspection i found the the right front brake disk/pad to be very hot and smelly. I continued driving, very lightly indeed, and by the time i reached my destination the smell had reduced.
At the end of the return journey the right front wheel was fine, yet the left was now hot and smelly!
Have i just reached some finite point in the wear of the disks/pads, where they are now fully run in or something, and will be fine after a few more miles?
Or have the same garage which overfilled my engine oil also bodged up my brakes?

I'd suggest bleeding the brake's, it could be you've got air/water in the system which when heated is causing the brakes to apply.
I'd also check that the brake calipers are moving freely (assuming the car has floating calipers).

It is possible the disc`s were replaced without degreasing before fitting.they are coated to prevent rusting before fitting so if put on in this manner will cause burning in ie grease burning off.Usually it makes braking harder because of the coating.but if driven as you say it is taking a while to burn off.unless a problem occured ie having to disconnect a caliper and wasnt bled properly.replacement of disc`s and pads should not cause any problems.running in wont take long on new discs

If only one brake unit is hot and smelly either that brake is not releasing fully, eg seized calliper or pivot, or the other side unit is not operating. Take it back to the garage.

I put new discs & pads on the front of the Vectra on Friday, and had an afternoon of rubbish & smelly braking. Was away all weekend and on this mornings drive into work the brakes are settling down ok. Still can't get the ABS to kick in so braking not 100% yet. Drive like you are in the depths of winter for a day or two and if they haven't sorted themselves out then take it back.
People fail N.Irelands automated MOT because they have new brakes fitted to close to the test date. My MOT is a month away and I have specifically done the brakes early because of this.

Sounds like they weren't degreased properly. I just put new front discs and pads on my Subaru Legacy and the brakes were back to normal after a few miles normal use with no smells either.

Seized caliper forced back to fit new pads and as it is a bit tight it is not knocking off properly. BAck to garage before you warp the new disc. Regards Peter

Hi
I find that taking the car up the backroads and giving it a bleaching until there is smoke billowing from the brakes is a great way to bed them in.instantly.
