Thinking about hiring one of these 30ft monsters next yeat to do a 2 week holiday across America .... anyone hired one of these things - advice ? What are they like to drive ?! Planning on picking one up from San Fransisco and driving north .....

Two weeks across America in a Winnebago? When are you planning on sleeping and actually doing holiday-type stuff?

Give yourself six weeks and relax, or stick to California/Oregon/Nevada. The Napa Valley alone is good for a day's leisurely visit, San Francisco shouldn't get less than a long weekend, preferably more. You get the picture.

done much touring in the states. As suggested dont try and pack in loads of mileage. you want time to enjoy. There aint much north of SF you can see in two weeks. Suggest you try lake Tahoe and Yosimite.

I did SF - Yosimite, Tahoe, Reno, Las vegas, Hoover dam, Flagstaff (grand canyon) phoenix (to meet friends) and flew out from LA - Thats was in 3.5 weeks and probably to rushed.

Personal choice - avoid LA like the plague.

Re the winnebago, not driven one but i would suggest you plan your overnight stops carefully, dont assume you can just park up anywhere.

hmmm ... probably worth trying not to sqeeze too much in then ? Only got 2 weeks drive time, so will have to be a bit choosey where to go ! Easy to forget how big America is, of course .... Grand Canyon a must ....

Agree with all the posts here. Napa valley is pretty close to SF and, as RF states, Lake Tahoe and particularly Yosimite are spectacular and within range. There are restrictions on entering Yosimite now and you must book well ahead.

Have driven similar vehicles its not difficult once on the road but getting in and out of tight spaces not easy - don't 'chop' corners. Also not something to run to the local shops in to get the rolls for breakfast - you have to stow lots of kit first. An alternative is the big pick-up and trailer.

Frankly 2 weeks is just not long enough. It makes a lot more sense, and is cheaper, to rent a car and use motels on a touring holiday.

Does anyone have any more details about this? We're doing a similar thing but with a convertible and motels. We don't really want to set a concrete itinerary, so it's a bit problematic booking anything in Yosemite. Are there motels close by outside the park we could stop in?

BazzaBear,
Sorry I have given you mis-information! In my defence I got this info from my brother who lives not far away - Sacramento. There were restrictions but these are now lifted for normal visits - unless roads are closed for the weather. However be prepared for long delays at peak times.

There are motels etc fairly near but these also can be fully booked fairly early in the day. It is worth finding the Tel Nos of hotels and booking a day or two ahead when you know your schedule. They tend to be a bit overpriced by USA standards but not excessively so.

Don't let the above put you off going as it really is spectacular - particularly when the waterfalls are in full spate. If you are into walking you can hike trails from 1/2 mile to 100+.

Next to White Hart lane when Spurs are winning I can't think of a nicer place to be.

Thanks Cardew

We're flying into LA on 22nd April, so hoping to get ahead of the traditional tourist times.
And I know that we're risking some of the roads into Yosemite being closed due to snow, but some friends went a couple of years ago and the main road was closed, they were forced to take a detour but said it was the best part of the trip, really breathtaking views.

I wouldn't bother with a Winnebago. I would just rent a nice big car and use Number 6 Motels or similar. Much easier and they're everywhere. Yes Tahoe is lovely. I have a half share in a condo there. Want to rent it hehe?

We picked up a hire car in Seattle and dropped it off in LA 19 days and 4000miles later. Went all over the west, as far as Utah/Arizona and using motels and camping. I think much easier than driving a winnebago. Vancouver is worth the visit too as is the interior of British Columbia. 2 weeks is the absolute minimum. Happy holiday!

By the way anybody know anything about Tennessee? Doing the Elvis pilgrimage this year.

went to gracelands last year stayed at hearbreak hotel
great hotel elvis music\films all day ,free bus that takes you to memphis all day ,have to vist sun studios, best tip
GRACELANDS OPEN THE GATES AT 07.00AM TO VIST THE GARDEN TO PAY YOUR RESPECT with luck you could spend time alone with the king,

I know Tennessee well. Did a lot of Hog riding there. The country round Chattanooga is beautiful, forests and lakes, the roads are great and virtually empty.

Memphis is a must. It's a NW Airlines hub so is dead easy to get in and out of. Graceland you will find is well served by tour packages and it is a great pilgrimage indeed. All those elderly sobbing matrons round the King's grave. Done it twice.
What I would say is leave your car in the motel parking lot and call up one of the tour companies to come and get you. Much easier. You will love it. Heartbreak Hotel. Take your felt-tip marker and write on the wall.

...and get your ass down to Beale St of an evening. You like blues/jazz? Doesn't get any better than that.

But hey you got to get to Nashville too. Hank Williams, Grand Old Opry, Dolly Parton's house, all that. TN is a great state.

But get ready for serious meals. Half a cow at one sitting isn't unusual and the margaritas come in industrial strength. Cold Michelob washed down with shooters of Jack and boy those big blonde country girls are something......get to a serious Country and Western bar as well, just don't upset those guys with the pickup trucks with the gun racks and them mean ole dogs in the back....

TN is a great state for motoring. It isn't the regular tourist stuff and US is incredibly good value as Cardew says. They also understand the concept of service which is so alien in UK. What I always like is you just rent a car, take off where the mood takes you, there's always a motel and good cheap food somewhere so no need to plan.

You'll love it too. Have a great trip and remember me to The King. I think his Convair jet (the Lisa Marie) is still parked there.

I've not done the Winnebago thing personally but we have friends who have.......once & never again.

They spent a day hunting round for parts to fix the errrmm waste pipe from the loo holding tank. Then when they got the parts it was a self fix job, quite unpleasant apparently.

They had specifically rented an RV with a diesel engine and apart from the aggro of finding diesel were glad they had. Every other holidaymaker they met who had rented petrol were really unhappy with the fuel consumption even at US prices.

Since then they have done the rental car / motel and would not change back.

Copy Growler about Tennessee, also try Gt. Smoky Mountain National Park. Bit busy at weekends but you can find solitude. 97.6% of Americans don't venture more than 100 yds from their cars. (Made up statistic but you get the picture)

I always go for the Number 6 wherever I can find them and they're pretty much everywhere. Clean, comfortable, secure, got all you need without unnecessary trimmings which only pump up the bill. I've never made a reservation yet although you can if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Great tip cheers Growler, we were planning our finances based on motels being approx £40-50 a night, but it looks like they're generally less than that even. If we stop in Barstow (between LA and Las Vegas), it's £18 a night!!!

I just got back from Florida and can confirm that things are ridiculously cheap right now. Levi's were only £15! I hadn't come across Number 6 so have added the bookmark, useful site.
