First cuckoo of spring - Tim Allcott
Travelling east as a passenger on A64 round York yesterday saw an unmarked small van in a layby with two cameras on tripods behind it facing traffic flow. After everyone had checked their speed (!), when you were close enough to read the portable roadsign by it, it said "Road tax enforcement". Anyone else come across on of these?

Regular visitors on the M20 coastbound. ANPR cameras linked to DVLA I think.

Actually the first (and, several times, nearly the last) cuckoo was to be seen this morning in an Astra, doing around 60 mph, about three inches from my exhaust pipe, on the A14 in heavy rain.

DVLA vans are fairly common on the A46 through Notts/Lincs. Also seen on a bridge across the M69 on a couple of occasions.

Yes, they DO make the traffic slow down, don't they? ;)

DVLA are mounting all their artillery in NE East England at the moment against Tax evasion. Watch out their is more about if you come up here.

They are doing good business this afternoon on the A308 by the Thames at Hampton Court.
Several drivers were "answering questions" as I went by.
Off with their heads I say.
We are used to the vans in our region but this was the first time I have seen a 5cwt sized van doing the job. It had both the back van doors open.
They leave the signs out for a few days to get a few more thinking. A very cost effective warning.

I thought they did need to check for Road Tax and MOT in this way anymore. From the current advertising campaign they are stating they can check for non-compliance through the DVLA SORN database? It seems they just like to find creative ways of spending tax payers money.

Sorry detail above should read "I thought they did NOT need to check for Road Tax

Think about it - the computer cull does not kick in until a month has expired (currently they are allowing two months).
If they can catch one midmonth then they double what they would be getting on the cull through a full Licence being taken out plus any costs awarded on a Prosecution for not having one.

Remember Jurassic Park?
"we check that all the animals are here"
"Do you check what you think you should have, or what you actually have?"
Man runs check - finds out there's many more dinosaurs than they expected!

The same logic applies.

*as an aside, I recall buying a B&W TV license. Nobody ever checked whether I had a B&W set - the bureaucrat logic was "he has a license, he must be ok". Otherwise, they were targetting properties with NO license....
