Audi 1.6 & Speedo cheating! - stavros
I just had a big argument with my father. I think it´s an age thing (I am 33 he is 62!).

A friend of his had a BMW 323i of ´86 that he changed recently for an almost new Golf 1.4! He soon got depressed with his new car and he is planning to change once more for an Audi A4 1.6 model 2000.
Judging from my wife´s A3 1.6 of 2002, I am trying to convince them that the A4 with 1.6 engine is hardly an improvement after the "lazy" Golf 1.4 . I did try to find the specs. for the A4 1.6 in the net but without any luck...(are they hiding them???)

Another issue that came was the possibility to hide the true milage of the specific car by turning back the odometer. My old man argues that it´s still possible (with conventional tech.) to "turn back time" while I insist that these latest technology instruments don´t allow such "modifications".

I would like to hear your opinions in relation to both these subjects...Am I an arrogant silly son, or is it that my father needs urgently an update???

Thank you for your patience,
Stavros

2000 could be either the old or new model. Parkers gives the stats as 12.5 seconds to 60 for the new model and top speed of 118mph. The old model is 11.5 to 60 and a top speed of 119mph. Neither are going to set the world on fire!

It is still possible to clock a car. just look in the back of any motoring mag to see all the adverts offering 'mileage adjustment'. Ring up and a bloke turns up with a laptop and he'll change the mileage to whatever you want it to be for about 70 quid.

2000 would be the old model because

a. the new model, though launched in Germany, didn't get here until February 2001 - very few X platers, though I was living next door to an Audi dealer at the time

and

b. the 1.6 didn't come into the new shape, as slow as it is, for about a year after that.

Yes, it'll be noticeably quicker than a Golf 1.4, but so is walking. Compared to a 323i though, it will feel as though they forgot the other half of the engine. Would it really cost him so much more to get one with a 1.8t, if necessary with slightly higher mileage?

I stand corrected!

As for your other point - as John says, mileage 'adujstment' is easily and frequently done, except with a digital odometer, the numbers always line up. That makes a genuine service history and all the other factors - stone chips (or lack thereof), steering wheel/gear lever/seat belt/trim wear, and general 'sharpness' all tally with the mileage indicated.

... even more important.

Okay, I shouldn't have hit the post button just then. You can't turn back time with a screwdriver on a digital odo, if that's what your father means - you don't need to either though.

Thanks for the posts!
It´s totally amazing if with a laptop you could hide the true miles!!! I just see my hi-tech world crambling into pieces....
That is mileage Terrorism!!!!

Not terrorism, just theft!

I am sure the black box subaru are going to introduce to check on "hidden" chips may help in this regard (until the black box itself is knobbled)

My Alfa recently (at 15k miles) had a new speedo fitted. The garage made a note of the mileage in the service book. I asked if they could just set the digital reading to what it was before, they said you couldnt.

Sorry PR, unless Alfa have fitted some sort of anti-tamper device to their odometers, they were wrong. Or perhaps they just didn't want to incur that £70 cost.
Possibly it's against their principles to adjust the mileage higher... ;)
