Wanted : Toyota ind' repairer Surrey - Colin M
A mate has a 10 year old Previa auto that is misfiring, running badly and doing about 5mpg. A mate of his changed the plugs with no effect (not me!).

Does anyone know a reliable independant mechanic in Surrey (he lives in Addlestone) that they could recommend. He wants to know if its worth chucking some money at it rather than scrapping it.

Grosvenor Garage in Guildford are number 1 for Toyotas. They were the Toyota main dealer but are now Honda but I know that Toyota still use them for difficult to fix problems on older Toyotas.

Not cheap but the best and they won't rip you off.

I'll get my mate to call them today. As it happens, he's starting a new job in Guildford on Monday, so it might be convenient for him.

Any others to try (including mobile units?)

Sounds like the coolant temperature sensor or the oxygen sensor to me. Try a post over in Technical as Andrew Moorey posts over there and he runs a mobile tuning service in the South that should be able to sort this without recourse to having to do a bank job.....

Just checked his profile and he gives his website as www.uktuneup.co.uk

(Do I get a kickback, Andrew?? :-))

Hi Colin,

I have not used them personally, but I have only heard good things about Premier Car Care, Unit 19, St George's Industrial Estate, Wilton Road, Camberley, 01276 64212.

I believe they are also not the cheapest, but apparently very good when it comes to diagnostics. And by diagnostics I mean deducing what is wrong rather than replacing bits until it starts working.

They fixed a friend's MX-5 in under an hour when Mazda main dealers had failed on three occasions.

Good luck!

Thanks Mark, and pinging Andrew, your website doesn't seem to work and I have no other contact details for you. I tried a "whois" on your domain mentioned in your profile but no luck.

Will pass all details onto friend who will need to put some work someones way by tomorrow!

Whilst I've been online trying to find a solution for this problem, my friend called the RAC who towed his car to an "approved" member garage. He told the RAC guy he'd had a recon engine 2 years ago and this was obviously passed on to the garage where the car is now. They rang him this evening, said they'd run a compression test and one cylinder was "a bit down" and said this didn;t surprise them given the source of his engine have quoted him £500++ for a head off job.

Given that low compression could be insignificant or caused by worn rings, I reckon he's opening himself to a huge bill leaving it with the "approved" place. Would it be reasonable for him to take his car for a second opinion (with one of the above suggestions)? It is just about driveable.
