Fiesta Leaking Petrol. - Matt75
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help with the following. We have a '97 R-plate Ford Fiesta 1.3 Encore, when the tank is near full & parked on a slope it will leak petrol from the fuel cap nozzle. Despite this being checked by a local garage who could find not fault (the fuel cap has been replaced.) Problem still occurs - again only when the car is parked on a slope & the fuel tank is near full.

I cannot think why this is happening. The obvious answer is not to fill the tank to the brim or close to the brim since it may just be a design fault somewhere.

We had this problem last summer in our 98 R reg 1.25 Fiesta. I put it down to expansion of the petrol due to the heat and filling it too near the brim. Doesn't seem to have happened since in the colder weather. Tips - don't fill up when you've only got a mile's drive left back to your house, stop filling at the fist click, park on the level. Sorry for stating the obvious :-)

sounds like fuel filler pipe is split.

Thanks All for your replies. It's a pain that the place of work where this car is parked is situated on a slope, have been reducing the amount of petrol in the tank.
However, sometimes even when 3 quarter's filled it will still leak petrol. Problem has also still been occurring during the colder weather. Mech1 - thanks for your suggestion regarding filler pipe, will look into.

On a Fiesta of that age the fuel filler pipe will either be a one-piece moulding from the filler to the tank(which is under the back seat)or it may be a two-piece with a rubber joint in the middle(check this is OK).At the filler end,it is screwed to the body with a seal between the body and the pipe.

Why not park facing down the slope.
