Octavia with 4 aerials - BobbyG
Curiosity has got the better of me.
Was overtaken on M8 today by an Octavia Estate which had 4, or maybe even 6, small stubby aerials on its roof in a rectangle shape.
It also had a phone aerial on front windscreen and the radio aerial at rear of car.
Any ideas what these would have been for and what the car was used for? The aerials were similar to what you sometimes see on traffic cars except they weren't as tall.
If it was some sort of GPS type thingy then why does it require 4 aerials instead of the 1 that most new cars have?

As I said, just being nosey! Anyone cure my curiosity?

You could post on www.briskoda.net - there's at least one Glaswegian cab driver on there, or was.

How about a cab with ordinary stereo, phone, GPS, and CB?

Could be a cop car with a tracker detector in it. Presume the tracker signal has to be picked up by some type of aerial so it could be that?

Or have TV detector vans got smaller!

Four aerials in a rectangular configuration would indicate direct finding equipment. Could be the Radiocommunications Agency looking for a pirate transmitter.

doh... direct=direction

"Could be the Radiocommunications Agency looking for a pirate transmitter."

Maybe but the aerials sound too short. They usually use co-linears (longer with a bulbous bit or three up the aerial length) and vans for all the DF gear. Do not ask how I know......

4 aerials normally means cop car with tracker. The only time you need 4 aerials equidistant on the roof is for DF'ing someone (Direction Finding)

Sometimes the mobile phone companies use them for cell interleaving checks.

Don't think it was a cop car, don't ask me why, but just didn't look like it nor driving like one. Unless it was a civilian returning it from service etc.

have no clue to what it is, but saw a white Audi Allroad 'van' going north on the A1 western bypass through Newcastle about a week ago, it had red chevrons over it,which is nearly as odd.

Most of the cellular network operators have mobile coverage test vehicles which drive round logging signal strength & call quality, could be one of those.

I wish they'd send one around here!

I have seen the Audis in this part of the world as well - I am pretty sure they belong to Area "Specialist Engineers" or some sort of description, working for Audi themselves.
