I have a recurring problem with oil in the coolant of my Audi A4 1.9 Tdi. Has anyone ever experienced this and what was the cause (and cure!)?
|
I think it may be a blown head gasket. I may be wrong -heard it somewhere.
Depending on mileage, it is more common on older cars. If coolant is o.k and the car has not overheated at any point, perhaps it may be a manufacturing fault?

head gasket is prime suspect, sounds like it's passing between the oil and water galleries. are you also getting coolant in the oil?, try a forum search, i am almost sure this problem has been covered before, you may find a more exact answer than i could supply.

Be careful.
Same symptoms on my fathers VW 1.9 TD ( 75BHP) 2 yrs ago.
combined with Red warning light for overtemp flashing constantly.
Head gasket was my shout. Local mechanic(VW diesel specialist) dis-agreed, saying he had seen this particular fault before on the 1.9 engine and it may just be a hose at fault.
Not exactly sure what the problem was in the end, but he cleaned out the oil in the coolant reservoir and replaced some rubber hoses that had perished. Cost 50 euros. Car still running like a clock.
I'm not saying this is your problem - but, worth being 100% sure before you go ahead with the gasket.
Good luck.

Thanks guys. There is no sign of coolant in the oil. The car has done 90,000 miles and the head gasket was changed two months ago for this problem. The oil cooler was then left disconnected for a few weeks to check for any signs of leakage but there were none. The cooler was then reconnected. However there`s now oil in the coolant again!

Might be worth checking core plugs for corrossion.

Had the oil cooler changed - appears to have solved the problem!

A common problem on Modine oil coolers as fitted to many VAG cars......
I wouldn't mind a quid for each gasket that has been changed for this fault to find it was the cooler all along..
