Hybrid Turbos??? - Mark in Ireland
I'm trying to source a supplier who can build a turbo to supply my needs. I would prefer a ball bearing turbo which rules out Turbotechnics. This is the email and posts I've sent to numerous turbo contacts.
Anyone here have any ideas?
Thanks

I'm trying to source a performance hybrid turbo for my 2.3T Saab. It has a Garrett T25 (CHRA 443854-55 TE1818F) as standard and did produce 220hp at 1.0bar boost pressure. I have additional items on the engine now and need a turbo which will spool up fast but also be able to supply up to 2.0 bar boost when required without running out of steam.
I've been in touch with 4 turbo specialists in the UK and have got 4 different specs on what I should buy! I'm confused!!

This is what I posted on a performance website....
I'm in the process of trying to get a ball bearing hybrid for my 2.3 Carlsson. One specialist says I need a GT 28 Series good for 320-360hp another says I need a T25-T28 with a .64 exh housing and a .42 or .6 or go to a 0.8 T250 compressor housing, another says I need a T28 with a .64 housing as fitted to 4x4 Cosworths.

Another US company told me this....
Looks like I have one more recommendation to confuse you with :-)
I would actually suggest a smaller T3/T4 hybrid. The reason being is twofold, one - even our largest T3 will only support about 325 HP at the flywheel which is a far cry from your 350+ goal. Two - I can't see a T2/28 series turbo producing that much HP. I haven't seen one yet.
As far as the exact turbo, I would suggest the T3/T4E hybrid with Super E50 compressor wheel & Stage II turbine wheel with a .63 A/R turbine housing ( T3 Flange ).

I'm running a gas flowed head, 3" JT exhaust, no cat, Aquamist running 50% methanol, modded airbox with JT filter, mbc plus minor other mods on this engine and am running about 1.6 bar but this might go up to 2.0 bar as I have a race engine built awaiting fitting thus want a turbo which will be able to supply 350+hp reliably.

Preferably the turbo will be a straight swap, but small mods to oil feed and return and waterpipes can be accepted.

Can you supply me with something suitable with what spec and at what cost.

sorry but can't help on the turbo bit.

just got a question though - will the FWD be able to cope with 350+ bhp? I was always led to believe that as soon as you try and push more than 200/22o thru the front wheels then you got too many problems. I believe that the Alfa GTAs with 250 is to be honest too much for the car and that the electronics cut in the whole time.

I'm pushing 300+ at the moment and obviously have torque steer but I'n not going to be using all the hp every minute of the day. Its nice to have for mid range torque and fast overtaking. 50-70 in 5th....5 secs, 50-70 in 4th...4 secs at the moment.

As it's a SAAB, have you tried Abbott Racing ?

www.abbottracing.com

They specialise in SAABs and performance upgrades for same, they may not have what you want but they might be able to point you in the right direction.

No, not that one.

Abbott Racing cannot help me. They aren't geared up for what I want and their prices are very expensive also.
