Drone on VW Golf Mk 11 at 30mph - Halmer
My old Golf has developed a drone that appears to worsen as the car warms up and is more pronounced/noticeable at 20 - 30 mph.

It sound like it is coming from the front left but I can't be sure. Sometimes I can hardly hear it; other times it is really pronounced.

Can anyone advise me what it might be please.

It'll be a hub (wheel) bearing - very common on the Golf.

You think it emanates from the left front? I'm willing to bet it'll turn out the be the right front...wheel bearings are funny like that!

As DL said.but would be inclined to replace both bearings at the same time.as you would pads.should speak for itself?

Jack the car up, and try and rock the wheel, if there is free play then the wheel bearing is likely to be the culprit.

Does it worsen with cornering if it worsens truning right then left (N/S) wheel bearing and visa versa. Regards Peter

Thanks and apologies for the delay in getting back.

I'm not sure at this moment whether or not it is worse when I corner.

I have noticed to be honest but I'll give it alisten tomorrow (it's too cold where I live to go back out tonight!).

I had both front whhel bearings replaced approx 12,000/two years ago. Don't they last very long?

Could well be diff whine. In which case I wouldn`t worry.but to be sure check out the wheel bearings anyway just to be safe.the other poss/inner drive shaft connected to gearbox has a bearing inside diff If you pull it from side to side will tell you if bearing on the way out. There should only be slight play on it.but if there is more than slight and it`s very rocky that may be the problem.? I could be wrong on both counts but worth the check.

might even be a rear bearing they are funny like that can sound like its coming from the front but you have had fronts replaced and they should last a bit longer assuming they were done properly ie not over/under tightened my advice check all 4 corners.youll find it.

The wheel bearing sounds likeliest to me. As others have said it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint which wheel is the culprit. I had a similar problem with the old 1.3 Polo Classic.

A loose engine mounting may be another possibility.
