I took my 98 Daewoo Lanos 1.6 SX for an oil change a few days ago and noticed after that a problem with the idle speed, in that it is fine when I first start the car up but then revs high when idle (at 1 500 instead of 900/1000).
Also from time to time in the last week or so the \'engine control indicator\' (aka the \'service engine soon\' light) comes up. The instruction book
is not very clear on that but states that \'if the indicator illuminates during normal running, a fault has occured. The engine control indicator light permanently on indicates fault which may damage vehicle\'. But it later says that \'if the engine control indicator comes on briefly and then goes out again this is normal and does not indicate a system fault\'
So, what is this light about and how does it work ? If all is normal, why does it come on ? (how does it know it needs a service ?
In the 2 1/2 years I\'ve has the car it had never come on before.

IIRC, same or similar engine as fitted to certain Vauxhall's, in which case the light is not a service interval light. It is only a light for the engine management, and will only illuminate when there is a fault somewhere. As the manual says, it is ok to illuminate briefy from time to time. When it comes on and stays on, then there is a problem.
As regard the erratic idling, there might be a problem with the idle speed control valve. Usually a good washing out with petrol solves it. Not sure where located on the Daewoo though.

Had this a few times with these 'ere Daewoo things. The idle speed valve is in the throttle body near the butterfly held in with two weeny torx screws. Take it out and wash off all the carp and dead bears from the control valve and clean up the throttle body at the same time. Disconnect the battery and fit it all up again. After about 10 mins start 'er up and let it idle without touching the throttle for another 10 mins then go for a run.You can get fault codes out of the ECU in the same way as on older Vauxhalls by bridging A & B on the diag socket. You will find it under the glove box, passenger side.

Here's the site where you'll find the fault codes.

Thanks all, is it mightily important and urgent this idle speed problem, I'm asking as I might get rid of it this summer

Thanks Andrew but I am just not good enough to do that ! Can that problem wait till I get rid of the car (2/3 months ?) whenever I 've got the money, it is an urgent thing ?

What are the consequences of a faulty idle speed ? Mine is fine when engine is cold but sticks and revs at 1500 after a few miles, is it a serious pb for the engine ? as I am to part-ex car (hopefully !) I am loathe to spend any more dead money on it, thanks

The light being on may upset the purchaser whoever it is. Try just disconnecting the battery for 10 mins, then start, let it idle then go for a run, might just do the trick.

I am experiencing trouble with the idle speed on my 98 Daewoo Lanos, it is revving at 1 500/1 600 when idle once the car has warmed up. I will take it to the garage next month, but can it wait that long, what damages to the engine can this sort of faults cause ?
