Hi

Not been on the Forum for a while, looking for advice from the people who know these things.

ive been interested in a BMW i3 for a while now, i realise the Car has been discontinued and im guessing their are newer and better mileage EVs around than their were.

im just looking for ideas of if it’s a Car worth buying.. Im looking at the last facelift which i think was 2018 might have been later

. Any replies most welcome

I was looking at these as a possible purchase too a couple of months back. They're pretty unique and I know from my own research that most owners love them and take care of them.

My advice is to join the BMW i3 owners group on Facebook, they're a friendly crowd and full of advice and experiences.

They do go wrong but because they've been around for 10 years, most problems are fixable. The one you don't want to get is the drive line fault, which would make one of the older ones uneconomic to repair.

If you're going for a facelift model (late 2017 onwards, thin strip DRLs at the front in place of round ones), it's the 120 Ah model which has the longest range.

I would recommend searching out an Approved Used example from a BMW dealer, as you get the added backup of a proper warranty.

Avoid models with 20" wheels (all S versions have these as standard, optional on non S), the ride is quite harsh and tyre noise increased.

Even the 19" wheel models are not particularly comfortable.

On a test drive, check for excessive wind noise - some models had poorly fitting door seals between the front and suicide doors.

But they are good fun and full of character.

Also consider the Range Extender version of the 94Ah model, the range is slightly better than the 120Ah pure electric.

The body is carbon fibre so avoid any examples with dents or scratches.

I still hanker after one but in the end we played safe and went for a new Mazda MX30 Range Extender!

Friend of mine has just sold his . Last of the series (2019) . with the bigger battery and no range extender.,( unnecessary and more to go wrong ) . Range about 150 miles. Bit quirky but functional. Only real annoying thing is the suicide rear doors.

Thanks for the replies.. Strange thing with the Range Extender the Road Tax seems quite high..So if I do find one I should be looking for 2018 or later.. I’m not sure if their to Old for BMW dealerships to hold but I’ll have a look.. I’ll I’ll also check the i3 Forum.. I f I buy one will have to sneak it past the Wife ??

Still plenty around at BMW dealers. I've even seen low mileage well kept examples on 66 plates recently

If buying an I3, you MUST ensure the aircon works properly as it also cools the battery.Compressors fail and if they fail badly will send shards of metal into the battery cooling. ££££s repair. Post 2018 compressors have a filter to prevent that happening.. German engineering!!!

The electronics of the Battery Control system are of dubious quality ££££s

Batteries last very well.

The 12V battery lasts about 5 years.. All sorts of failure warnings when voltage is low.

Clevely EVs tried and succeeded in repairing a battery control unit but BMW declined to reconnect the unit to the cars ECU. They succeeded eventually and saved the owner over a thousand pounds . Clevely seem to have lots of experience in these and now have a mobile service. Maybe worth speaking to them in Cheltenham.

I had one for a bit, it's fun. Perfect for downtown driving, not good for anything else (it's awesome, but doesn't have the ability to safely travel or do interstate stuff imo). But if you're going back and forth to work, it rules.
