I have a feeling speed traps and points on licences are more common place.

After a weekend break in Derbyshire during May I received and unwelcome piece of post. Exceeding 30 mph on a main road due to lack of concentration - camera was fixed on a pole behind me. Then having been away to Devon a couple of weeks ago I received more unwelcome post. This time caught doing 36 in a 30 limit after taking a wrong turn, from behind by a mobile/hand held camera, so that's three points and a speed awareness course - gather the latter is good.

On both occasions I know I wasn't concentrating, so I'm entirely at fault. These are the first infringements I've had for many years. Woman in my local Post Office says recently more people are being caught. Is this the case for others?

Most certainly. In 2000, around 600,000 were caught speeding. Last yr it'll be around a quarter of a million. Multiply that by £100 and it gets about a mile of new motorway. Fine by me; happy for as many as possible to be caught in 30mph zones, less so on M-ways and fast main roads where there are few pedestrians.

Then last year 350,000 less than in 2000, so it's going down.

Interestingly where I was exceeding 30 were both low population areas, one was on a main road where I'd not anticpate it being 30, although I know street lights are supposed to be an indicator.

I wonder if its just a general wider decline in the standards of driving.

Every day I see something - red lights jumped, failure to let pedestrians cross, driving too close to cyclists, taking the "racing line" at roundabouts and straying into other lanes.

The list goes on......

When I started driving (in 1990), if you made a mistake and another driver pipped his horn at you or flashed his headlights, you'd put up your hand to say sorry. Now they're more likely to get out and punch you - like the irate driver in front of who slammed on his brakes, stormed out of the car and shouted "why the F do you keep flashing me?"

"You've got no lights on, pal" I replied.

Way back in 60's people got murdered for beeping a horn at the guy infront, unable to find first gear.

TBH, I think there are more 30 limits where at one time there weren't. Usually I drive on my own, on the tw aforementioned occasions I had passengers. In future I must concentrate more!
