Porsche C88? - badbusdriver

Browsing YT this morning, I came upon a short clip about the 1994 Porsche C88, a model I was completely oblivious to.

The C88 (which doesn't feature any Porsche badging!) was a compact 4 door saloon, it appears to be of a similar size to the type of supermini based saloons popular in various countries like China and Russia.

After doing a little research, I found out that the design was in response to an invitation from the Chinese government for car manufacturers to put forward design proposals for the domestic market. One (out of two I believe) prototype resides at Porsche's Stuttgart museum.

The response from China to the C88 was not altogether surprising given what we now know of their attitude toward design copyright(!). According to the Porsche Museum director, the Chinese government said, "Thank you very much, took the designs for free, and if you look at Chinese car designs now, you can see many details of our C88 in them"

Porsche also tried to drum up interest for the car in India, but to no avail.

It may seem odd to people now that Porsche would get involved in something like this. But it needs to be remembered that back then Porsche was in a pretty perilous financial position, so it probably seemed like a good opportunity to get some cash in the coffers!. The Boxter, which would start to turn things round for the company, was still a couple of years away from production. And the Cayenne, which would really get the money flowing in, still 8 years away.

Here are a few pics:

This would be around the time that Porsche were doing consultancy/design work for other OEM’s - SEAT Ibiza with a System Porsche engine?
They were involved with a fairly unlikely bunch of cars.

Very interesting, thanks for that link!.

I knew about a few of them but had no idea about most. Sadly no mention of the Hyundai XG30, who's Tiptronic gearbox was Porsche's work.

The front end and bonnet shape reminded me of the facelifted 4th gen Fiesta?

I quite like it. Reading MCB's article takes me back to learning to drive in a first generation Ibiza, although I don't think it was a Porsche one, it was a diesel with the tickover set so high that you couldn't stall it.

A mate of mine had a Lada Samara and a vague notion that it had something to do with Porsche. It was garbage (jazzy interior, though) and my.other mate's Riva estate was much better.

Porsche, like Lotus, Cosworth, Ricardo, etc have "always" done a lot of consultancy / engineering work for other brands, often their competitors!

At the same time as Cosworth were developing Escort, Sierra and Granada/Scorpio, and allowing Ford to use their name, they were also developing the 16-valve engines for Opel/Vauxhall - indeed the early version had cylinder heads cast by Cosworth, known as Coscast.

Possibly, though I get more of a mini-me Ford Orion feel to it, at least on the outside, and something akin to the Nissan Micra K12 on the inside.

I can see why Porsche didn't want to put their badge on it. :-)
