Hi Folks,
Is anyone aware of any "deals" on batteries from major chains at the moment?
Or any other recommendations, likely best motor factors, etc?
Yes, the XM battery is in it's twilight years. It's the original stamped June 96. It did not want to warm my equally mature glow plugs this morning. I was aware of both of them being elderly and frail, and finally this caught me out. It's surprising how the cold weather causes sudden failure. Just the same happened to my Monterey.
Cheers

What are you looking for r, an 096 with 3yr warranty for around £45?

Hello M.M.,
That sounds about right. Is 096 a common notation? Any deals on the web? (The Bedford Levels are a bit far for me.)
Have you run out of gas in the workshop by any chance? :-))
Thanks for the reply

I think(?) an 096 is right for the diesel XM. It is what we put on the ZX TD last month...but our cars are always "over battery'd" because of jump-start duties.
We have two local enterprising outlets within 3mls that sell batteries for trade-ish prices.
I notice they charged me £45 for a 4yr warranty Ducellier 075 Calcium last time. That is another similar size to your requirement.
So my guess for yours is £35 for a 2yr or £45 for a 3/4yr.
By the way we have several large capacity deep cycle batteries but these are not best for car use.
Plenty of gas but the electrical safety gas valve has packed up. Would be pretty chilly but I've taken two days off to do my income tax! So in the warm and soothed by rock music!

Thanks M.M.
You have my sympathies in doing the tax return. I am looking out at the snow-covered Cleveland Hills and similarly listening to a freebie "Classic Rock" CD from "The Mail on Sunday". Full length tracks for the price of a ranting paper (which I can use for rabbit bedding anyway)
Thanks for the advice. Just for the record, cranking is just about OK, but no joy from the glow plugs. It's my fault for not fitting them, as I have them on the shelf. It just goes to show what the plugs need.
billy- thanks for your help. I have got some quotes for some from them. Has your experience been favourable?
They quoted as follows - does this seem reasonable?:
--------------------------------------------------
Thanks for your enquiry
The 096 is more powerful as standard than the 067. The standard CCA of
an 067 is 550, whereas the standard CCA of an 096 is 600. However, there
are 4 specifications for each of the batteries you require.
We stock 4 different specifications for the 067. The 067 has a 2 year
warranty and is priced at £46.99. The E067 has a 3 year warranty and is
priced at £57.99. And the F067 has a 4 year warranty and is priced at
£67.99. The F067 is an uprated battery which will provide 33% more CCA
(starting power) than other leading brands. The standard 067 is 550CCA.
The E067 is 590CCA. The F067 and F067X are 650CCA.
We stock 4 different specifications for the 096. The 096 has a 2 year
warranty and is priced at £49.99. The E096 has a 3 year warranty and is
priced at £60.99. The F096 has a 4 year warranty and is priced at
£73.99. And the F096X has a 5 year warranty and is priced at £83.99. The
F096 and F096X are uprated batteries which will provide 33% more CCA
(starting power) than other leading brands. The standard 096 is 600CCA.
The E096 is 630CCA. The F096 and the F096X are 750CCA.
These batteries are available from stock and are normally supplied
within 2-3 days from receipt of order. Prices include VAT and delivery
is free on all orders over £10.00, otherwise there is a £2.00 carriage
fee. If you would care to call us on 01623 757377 we will arrange
delivery. I hope I have addressed all of your issues, if there is
anything else I can help you with please let me know.

They sound OK.
Their E096 would compare to the one I mentioned for our ZX which had a £55 sticker on it in the shop. Add carriage and £60.99 is about right to have it arrive at the door.
I think you would get under £50 though if you could be bothered to phone several places.

rg,
seem to have plenty of choice there for you!
they delivered to my door on the second day (ordered mon-delivered wed) by courier, batteries were securely packaged, but had just been filled with acid and had not had their initial charge. all in all i couldn't fault the service.

For those living in the midlands, try CAS motor factors. They are Bosch agents. Couple of weeks ago they did me a Bosch 'Silver' 067 for £32+VAT, which I think is a very good price. The Bosch Silver are a good battery IMHO.

Aprilia. Wherabouts in the Midlands are they. Phone no if possible. Many Thanks.

There are branches all over the place.

Folks,
Just for the record, I went for a F096 700CCA calcium from, gasp, H******s. £69.00-ish incl £20.00 off. With a 4-year warranty.
Sadly, I needed it "there and then", so had to succumb. The equivalent from County Batteries was around £83.00.

Any comments since you've had it? Calcium batteries are on offer again in H******s and I'm tempted, but I've no idea if they are a genuine improvement, or just snake oil.
TIA

HI!
Fine so far, although I guess that it's a bit early to tell. It turns over the 2.5 XM lump on cold mornings, and does not seem to "sag" when the lights are left on with engine stopped.
I don't like buying from "the establishment", but, sad to admit, some of their products and prices are OK.

I know what you mean - it doesn't feel right! Still, as you say, sometimes they deliver the goods...
Thanks to the others for their replies, too. I will shop around a bit (no Costco nearby, unfortunately) but at least I have a benchmark.

I bought a Calcium battery a couple of years ago from my Dad's Fiesta from Halfords. It failed after 11 months of it's 4 years warranty, but, I have to say, Halfords were very good about it when I took it back. The young girl on the desk didn't even test it, all she wanted to see was the receipt and she just told me to go and get another one!
Their batteries are made by Yuasa, which, so I believe, are normally very good when fitted as original equipment in Japanese manufactured vehicles.
|
If you know anyone who is a Costco member - well worth looking their for batteries. I recently bought a "Bosch Silver" much cheaper than other quotes.
|
Don't slag off Halfords batteries. SWMBO's 106 is running on 1 six years old.. replaced after 30 months under warranty with no quibbles..
