Toyota cost price plus £100? - fray bentos

Hi all.

Just been invited to go to a 'special' event at toyota dealer where they are offering new cars at cost price, whatever that really means, plus £100, sounds like a bargain, or is this just another marketing exercise with lots of time wasting waffle?

I get sent these invites all the time but don't bother as you have to book an appointment etc. Has anyone actually attended one of these events and actually paid less than, for example, carwow or drive the deal? Thanks!

Deals like these used to be quite common not specifically Toyota. In the past they simply showed the price they were paying for the new car and ignored bonus payments of various sorts by the manufacturer which in effect reduced their buy price.
I have no idea how any current scheme works but the acid test is, as you say, how the price compares to other outlets. Also the dealer can increase their margin by selling add-ons (paint protection, GAP insurance and the like) or by low trade in offers.

Worth attending if you’re interesting in buying a new one. They’re probably the safest bet you could buy these days. Hybrid Toyota’s are pretty bulletproof.

I used to attend special launch nights and events as a Mitsubishi salesman, and yes we were able to offer better deals on the night. Cars weren’t given away and I question what they mean by “cost” is it the wholesale cost or their own cost to sell? This could be made up nonsense, a pure marketing ploy. But no harm in turning up if a new Toyota appeals to you.

Tell that to all the owners that have had a dead car because the 12v battery is flat!

Loads of old Prius and Auris hybrid taxis with huge mileages running around the planet with few major failure only backs up my comment. They rarely go wrong and have a strong reputation for reliability, but as with full EV’s or any car for that matter 12v battery failure can stop proceedings for a very short spell and cost you a mighty £80-£150 or so to cure. Hardly a disaster, as long as you don’t try to jump start them, this can cause problems.

Do some research on Broker Prices

Print off / take screen shots of the car you are interested in.

After the salesman Cost price + £100 pitch produce your search results!!!

I did that sort of thing the last time I bought. They wouldn't budge, so I went elsewhere and saved £3K. They kept calling me and didn't seem to understand they priced themselves out of my market.

I did that when buying an Aygo in 2006. Showed the dealer the broker price and the chat ended quickly. The broker was cheaper than he could do. Saw the car just yesterday.

I wonder how many of the flat 12 volt battery on Toyota hybrids are caused by owners wiring in stuff like dash cams incorrectly or sitting there in accessory mode listening to the radio etc.

If I'm sat listening to the radio I leave it in Ready mode in park so the engine can cut in / out to keep the batteries charged up as required.

Nothing quite like showing a car dealer a broker or carwow quote and asking them to match it, especially if they have taken time to invest in the meet and greet.

My experience is they hurry off to the sales manager and soon return with a different more aggressive tone saying they cant help.

Key, as ever, is cost to change.

Found this clip from Ashley Neal, suggesting putting a (previous Generation) Yaris Hybrid in Park rather than Neutral when waiting in traffic. Relevant part at 4mins 0sec.

Seems strange that it keeps the battery charged when in Park, but not in Neutral!

Neutral disconnects the hybrid system which means the hybrid battery will no longer be charged which in turn means the 12 volt battery will no longer be charged.

I leave the vehicle in D & use the brake hold function while waiting in traffic, after 3 minutes of brake the hold the system will automatically engage the parking brake.

My Kia hybrid is also the same. May be all hybrids are like that.

Yes a flat battery would be a concern as I only do about 3k miles a year. I'd be looking at a corolla or CHR but I the corolla is getting old now and is very tight in the back. Have seen 6k off a Chr elsewhere but is about to be replaced with a new model.
