I'd check out the Focus saloon, or even an Astra saloon, although they seem even rarer than the Focus.
Other than that, I think Suzuki do a very small Nova sized saloon, check them out, there's one round our way that I think is Suzuki, I've never really seen the badges, but it basically looks like a C3 saloon, if you can imagine what that would look like.

"The reason the market is limited is because there is little demand. Why have a saloon when a hatch is much more versatile?"
This is a UK thing. In Ireland they prefer saloons. Don't forget a saloon can have a *really* big boot with folding seats.

I have to admit to wondering why you would want saloons. Resale is absolutely pants in comparison with the otherwise identical hatchback. Just look at the belmont, nova, jetta, vento, polo/derby.....

In every hatchback I have travelled in the back seat the wind noise has been excessive. I have never seen this mentioned in any reviews. I guess it is because it is tested mainly by people in the front seats followed by lets park it and see if 2/3 bods can sit in the back. Maybe there is no concern about your back seat passengers.
I would go for a secondhand saloon every time as great value.
Bora v Golf is a good example.
Availability certainly does vary by country. For example Fiesta, Yaris, Astra all available with a boot abroad.
As I suspect, Ian will confirm, in South Africa, apart from some cheap old model Golfs, the booted version of cars are far more popular.
I do not want to carry large bulky items and with a folding split rear seat can still carry long items.
A saloon for me every time.

What about some nearly new focus saloons? Ugly as sin but good value compared to the hatch!
|
Almost ugly by design.
If I had to be seen in one it would be the VW Bora.
|
I've always owned hatchbacks or estates, but having driven a few saloons, I found them nicer than I thought.
Lots more bootspace than a hatch, and much easier to get at -- the lid lifts upwards rather than coming back into your face. More secure luggage area, too.
Quieter (no road noise from boot), quicker to heat up in the winter, and - in most cases - better rear visibility.
Next time round, I'd be tempted.

Well so far i seen a daewoo lanos saloon my neighbour had, while being obviously brittle nasty plastic interior, it does look smashing for the price he paid new (£6,000 flat). However after a visit to my local daewoo dealer and 2 phone calls to others, ive been informed that no body has pre-reged 03/53 plate or any non-reg in sufficent quantites that we require. The car is out of stock, however he said they are considering a saloon version for the kalos under a chevrolet badge? im confused to.
Focus, astra, bora, liana, 45, almera etc - all to big.
require saloon of the size of the old nova and accent.
next week have a day booked off to view fabia and cordoba (seems expensive!).
out of interest, i really like the ford old fiesta thats sold in india especially the 1.3 engine was a cracker. was just wondering what would the insurance be like in the uk and furthermore, how do i import them without going to india? although ideally i would love to import the tata indigo 1.4 diesel - bargain!

one of the over-riding (for me) advantages of a hatchback is the ease of cleaning inside the rear screen - almost impossible to do it properly without suffering bodily contortions in saloons.
|
I checked, it is the Liana.
Check out www.suzuki.co.uk and look for the Liana.
It's Nova sized, and available as saloon or hatch and looks well equipped. Probably reliable as well. Worth a look?

Liana - as seen in 'A Star in a reasonably priced car' on Top-Gear every week!!
Corolla saloon too big?

Posh cars are always saloons, can you imagine a hatchback Lexus or Merc 500?
|
wish there was a Lexus hatchback - am only getting rid of my 200 cos I want 5 doors and front wheel drive. Sadly, in so many countries, the so versatile and Europe-popular hatch is considered less prestigious than the equivalent saloon version.
I'll never understand it.

wish there was a Lexus hatchback
Maybe there isn't then. Certainly some of their cars on their web site (IS200 Sportcross?) look like hatchbacks.

Not always. There are plenty of posh hatchbacks around. Isn't the Range Rover a hatchback? I'm pretty sure that Lexus (can't think of those without Alan Partridge and his friend with the 'Lexi' coming to mind) do make hatchbacks.

IS200/IS300 Sportcross is much more like a hatchback than an estate. It also looks much better in the flesh than in a picture.

Hi all,
if you were considering a Focus saloon, then I could highly recommend it; my Dad has one in which I learnt to drive. He's had all of the Fords - Mondeos, Escorts etc... and even a few VW's and I can safely say, without doubt that this is the nicest car he has owned (and I'm not biased). We rag the car if we're being honest and don't really take all that much care of it but it takes it all with ease and hasn't let us down once...yet. I will say this though. Although I would recommend it, if you are considering it as a SMALL saloon, then I would at least take it for a drive before you buy (which thinking about it is the most stupid thing I've ever said) but it is a lot bigger than most people think - especially the back as it is raised quite a bit off the ground. Hope this helps...
