I have the ABS warning light coming on, if I switch the ignition off then on again the light may go out for a while. I have cleaned the reluctor rings but the symptoms remain. Is there a code system for diagnosing faults of this nature. I wanted to check the sensor lead connection by the servo unit however it does not appear obvious how it comes apart. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

most abs problems stem from a sensor fault or sender ring fault
in your case i would say you have a sensor fault
each wheel has a sensor mounted on the hub ass trace the wire back carefully looking for cracks in the insulation though the body and up to the plug most are on the inner wing on the front and poss under rear seat/under floor at the rear just pull it apart stick a meter set on ohms on the two pins and spin the wheel by hand note reading repeat all wheels one by one (try to get same speed) should get one dodgy reading thats the fault
on a lot of rovers you get the abs cutting in at about10/15 mph when pulling up at junction etc slowly that is a split sender ring and you will need to look for the split in the ring around the cv joint (will be all rusty and the rust between the ring and the cv joint has expanded and cracked the ring)new cv joint is the answer or rear hub ass
hope this helps

Thanks for the info, the car does as you say and does have the ABS cutting in at about the speed you say when coming up to a junction. I have cleaned the off side front ring as it feels like that wheel is affected. I can't see any spilts or cracks but I will give it a closer inspection. Again many thanks for the help.

Cracked ring, guaranteed.

It's possible to determine whether a sensor is dodgy or not by putting a meter across the pins of the underbonnet connector. It's not necessary to spin the wheel to get a reading .If it's the same as my 827,I was able to find the failed sensor easily and replace it after having had the same symptons as you describe.
