Hi all,
Just a few questions to ask; I will be going to live with my girlfriend in Hong Kong for 6-12months or better for good! only if i can sort out a job there, my main concerns are:
1) My car is still on finance, i have at least another 12months to pay it off
2) The car first MOT is in April and also at the same time is my insurance
I think i will payoff my car before i leave, just want to know whether is was legal to leave my car without MOT and insurance until i come back to the UK, ideal i would like to keep the car just incase things don't work out overthere in terms of a full time job.
cheers all

Webbman,
No doubt someone will be along in a few minutes to give you detailed advice, but I think that you should look at the DVLA site and SORN - Statutory Off ROAD Notification.
Magic city - re seeking work, try to look Chinese and don't even think about driving there for a while.
Good Luck!

I would think that as your return is uncertain it might be unwise to mothball a car for perhaps more than a year while it loses value inexorably (unless someone else has the use of it in your absence). After all, you can easily find another - unless it is very very special of course?

Webbman,
It doesn't have to be goodbye, you know, this is the WORLDWIDE web, after all. Plus I think we have a vacancy for a Hong Kong correspondent.

Sell it. It's only a lump of tin. It's not a SWMBO.
Spiders will love you if you don't sell it, otherwise it will carry on costing you money as it depreciates. And what if the garage it is in is destroyed in a fire whilst it is uninsured?
And if you can afford to pay the finance off, do so NOW! Even if it means giving up beer for a fortnight. But I'm only a parsimonious old curmudgeon.

Depending where you leave it, not having insurance could be risky - accidental damage, theft etc. Not sure about the legality though.
