What value a FVWSH on my 1997 Golf VR6 ? - Sparks
Coming around to annual service for my VR6 and whilst I'm loathe to use a local VAG dealer due to previous experiences I'm also aware that the car currently has a FVWSH. It hasn't been modified in any way, I'm the second owner and current mileage is 58k. I'll be selling it approx 3 to 6 months from now. Any ideas as to how much difference the FVWSH would make when I come to sell ?

Cheers,
Sparks

This subject was covered recently as a general question (not car specific) on the following thread :-

Sparks,

Speaking as someone who often advises folks on which cars to look at/buy...

For a private sale I think you'll be fine with VW or a VW specialist service. Some folks may grumble a bit if it was done at a bomb site of a place.

All that would worry me would be if you were selling it having deferred the due service for a few thousand because you were getting shot, that is quite common and helps to form a picture of the likely maintenance standard.

Of course if you are trading in some places (a VW dealer for sure) will use anything other than a full VW history as a reason to drop their offer.

I think you also have to take into account the nature of the car. The VR6 models are quite specialist and as such I would look for a VW service history, but if it were something like a mondeo or focus I dont think I would be to bothered.

it's because the car is a VR6 and not too run of the mill that I've posted the question to be honest. Also, I've had a look at the general thread mentioned above ( thanks Dude ) but that seems to be more geared to part ex at a dealer whereas I'm thinking private sale for my car ( theory being to someone who is definitely looking for a "straight" VR6 in good condition ). A difficult one to call sure, but I know there's a wealth of motoring knowledge available across the Back Room participants !

I've declared my preference for independent specialists often enough in the Back Room. As a very contented VR6 owner, I'd place a small bet on prospective purchasers being happier to see evidence of regular servicing by an independent whom they could contact to discuss the car than to be presented with an array of main-dealer stamps -- unless they were buying to sell on to the uninitiated. Many people interested in a car like this know the score and have probably formed very similar views of main dealers themselves; their interest must be pretty serious to take on the insurance and relatively high fuel bills. However, I guess I'm biased, as I'm not (never?) selling.

Speaking of fuel bills, I get about 30 mpg from mine. What do you get?

0mpg from mine as my coil pack has gone again!

Roger - funny you should mention MPG. I was achieving circa 30 until a couple of weeks ago but have seen a decrease of circa 6 MPG ( on average ) since then. I don't believe anything obvious has changed in the way the car drives during this period and am still using Optimax - most confusing.

I had decided ( no better ideas ) that this was proof of the car needing the service I referred to originally in this post, but do you have any other ideas or have you ( or you BB ) experienced anything similar with your VR6 at any stage ?

By the way, I'm very fond of the car but the combination of it's 3 doors and my kids ( both under 3 ) is a killer on my back !

Hi Sparks,

May be a long shot, but your drop in MPG could be due to the cold weather (shouldn't be more than a couple of MPG though). Also, is your thermostat working? Mine has packed up (again) and this means that the temp gauge never rises above 70 degrees Centigrade. This means it takes longer to reach its optimal operating temperature.

I am sure someone else will come along and explain in more detail, because I can't!!!!

I knew a VW mechanic (worked with my brother before he moved to Oz). I used to get him to service my Scirocco at his home. A lot cheaper than the garage and I still got all the knowledge of their senior mechanic.

Maybe you could ask a VW mechanic to see if they work from home as well.

try www.golfgti.co.uk. loads of enthusiasts looking for VR6's and all quite understand that a FVWSH costs a fortune, so most use specialists.

Should be able to sell it no probs.
