Ford Ka, started OK, engine running but get screaching noise if lights are switched on.
Any ideas? Alternator belt?
Thanks

Very likely - unlikely to be the bearings.
Get someone to switch the lights/heated rear screen, etc on whilst you\'ve got the bonnet up - should be fairly obvious.

If the noise only occurs when you switch the lights on, then it is almost certainly an alternator belt needing tightening.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of vehicles driving around this time of the year, when demands on the car`s battery are at their highest, with slack alternator belts !!!!

ref belt screeching, The polyvee belt runs on an automatic tensioner.pssible cause may be tensioner strarting to seize or dry alt. bearing.

With the bonnet up and the lights on, dribble a little water on the belt (stand out of the way for splashes), if the noise stops then it is definitely the belt.

....or a short burst of WD40 or similar.

A squeaky fan belt can often be cured temporarily using water, WD40 etc. A loose, screeching belt won't be. Another point to be aware of is that when the belt screeching, the battery isn't being charged. A simple check with a voltmeter will show this.
