Passat 2001 Help - wonderwheels
Can anyone tell me the location of the fuel and pollen filters on the 1.9TDi(130) model.Need to change them but not sure of their whereabouts. Thanks

Assume location same as 2000 model for pollen filter. Look to the left of the battery near the bulkhead for pollen filter housing. Be very careful when replacing the rubber seals as there are numberous reports of the these seals failing, turning the passenger footwell into a small swimming pool. Halfords replacement filters come with full instructions if you haven't picked up the filter already.

Not sure about fuel filter.

Isn't your Passat still under warranty (3 years, 60,000 miles)?
If so you could have warranty problems with VW if you change things yourself. The fuel filter is under the engine acoustic hood and very difficult to get at - be careful you don't damage hoses and seals. The Pollen filter is not near the battery, I think you get at it from inside the car. There is no way Halfords will sell these filters.

The warranty is up on 1st March 2004 anyway.Cost of 40K service is around £240.Cost of these parts(oil, oil filter, fuel filter pollen filter) around £50.Tempting fate here, but the amount of things that have went wrong with my car in the last 14 months doesn't suggest to me that anything else can happen before March.

Hope you don't mind me saying this but I think you are being a bit optimistic about the parts prices. Oil alone (you must use VW 505.01 spec) is about £7.50 a litre and you need 5 litres. You may have to buy it from a VW dealer unless you can find a source for Millers 505.01. Oil filter is about £8 and the fuel filter about £20. I dislike VW dealers as much as the next one but if you have the 40k service done by them and something major goes wrong in the next year you could get a good will gesture. There is also the idea that a fully stamped service book increases the 2nd hand value, but if you are keeping the car for ever then that doesn't matter.
IMHO you might be better finding a good independent VW garage - as long as they use the correct oil!

EuroCarparts - Fuel Filter £11,Oil filter £6,Pollen filter £6.5 litres of XFE-PD (approved by VW) from Millers Oils £21.You are right, I COULD get a goodwill gesture, but if anything it would be a subsidised repair.I generally hate getting ripped off.The fact that I even bought a Passat annoys me, with all the problems I've had.I wouldn't even sell it now due to the depreciation, so I'll be keeping it for a while.

Sounds OK to me - I'm sure you're right. My 2001 Passat is due for it's 3 year service next September so I'll probably go down the same road (no pun intended!)

Just had my 40k service done on my 2 year old Passat diesel at a Cheshire main dealer. £173- pretty reasonable I thought. And the car was collected and returned clean.
Had to pay ~£130 separately out of my own pocket for a suspension alignment check, not covered by warranty they said, as I was dissatisfied about the tyre wear. Said to be back in spec now so we'll see.
Other problems have been with the dealer rather than the car.
