Bedford Rascal Cold Start Problems - Rdw
From cold it turns over but will not fire, but will bump start easily? ok hot though. 1988. Have already tried: new plugs and leads, battery, points.

Bedford Rascal Cold Start Problems - none
If I remember correctly these had a manual choke, be worth checking that it's working OK.
I would also change the condenser, and as third step the ballast resistor. I've come across a couple with 'incurable' carb problems, but this usually means a slight hesitation / misfire during light acceleration.

You probably have a non-functioning ballast resistor by-pass circuit. This can be caused by a faulty starter motor(unlikely),a bad connection at the starter motor or a wiring fault.I'd suggest you run a new wire from the smaller of the two spade terminals on the starter motor to the positive side of the ignition coil.If that doesn't improve cold starting, then the starter should be replaced.

Yes - I agree. Check the ballast circuit first.
The bypass wire normally falls off at the starter motor solenoid connection!

On the subject of these vehicles and ballast resistors I expect DD can remember when Rascal was first introduced to the UK from GM they were allegedly made up from kits from Japan. The ballast resistor was a resistive wire in the loom but GM in their infinite wisdom fitted a conventional ceramic resistor as well dropping the running voltage down to about 5 volts. OK when new but after a short while ignition output began to suffer with predictable results!

hey im a complete novice with cars, i was recently given a suzuki super carry 88. im havin similar problems with mine..can anyone tell me where the ballast resistor is located.

many thanks

Before you go and try a ballast resistor, why not test to see if that's the problem first.

A multimeter, costing only a few pounds from somewhere like Maplin is good enough for this.

Test the voltage on the positive side of the coil low tension, both with the ignition on, and while cranking, and report back both values.
