Oil pressure warning- Laguna 1.6 16v - No Do$h
(sigh) This will teach me for driving her car for the day....

The digital display on Mrs NDs Laguna is showing an oil warning on starting the engine ( OIL- - - - - - ). This stays flashing for about 30 seconds after starting. On quizzing Mrs ND was informed \"it always does that\".

Checked levels and all fine. Just to be sure I did an oil and filter change yesterday afternoon. Old oil not overly discoloured and no signs of swarf on the sump plug. Warning still flashes for 30 secs on start.

Anyone got any ideas? The warning tends to suggest pressure problems but I\'m puzzled that it clears after a short while.

My only experience of Renaults is three borrowed company cars - a Y reg Scenic and a M reg previous model Laguna and a 2002 previous model Megane. On all of these pressing the right hand stalk end in just after starting up produced several dashes as you describe - the more dashes the higher the oil level. You got worried when only one or two dashes were shown! Are you pressing anything to display this warning or is this the latest model Laguna of which I have no knowledge. If it is, perhaps the new model checks the oil and displays the level at every start. My Dad's old Renault 21 GTX had a useful gauge with a needle that did this for a few seconds at every start. This sounds to me like that number of dashes is just telling you the sump is full.

Isn't that the oil level indicator ??
OIL----- means that the level is high, and OIL- would indicate the level being very low.

I am standing ready to be corrected.

It\'s the fact that the darn thing stays on so long that worries me. Loads of dashes, so that\'s a good thing, but 30 seconds seems a bit excessive.

All our Renaults here stay on for about 30 seconds if you push the stalk to check the oil level. I assume Renault just want you to notice it!

Sorry to upset you but dash is bad blob is good.

You should have a row of o o o o o not - - - - - -

When full it displays OIL o o o o o

when half empty it displays OIL o o o _ _

when empty it FLASHES OIL _ _ _ _ _

Oh and its a level indicator not pressure. If you have checked the oil and its full, then its just a level sensor thats gone.

Easy to fix/replace? Doubtless they are buried somewhere in the heart of the engine and need 7 hours of labour to access the sensors.....

mate does 1000 miles a week in a focus 1.6 petrol. he found it slower than usual going up an incline on a motorway and found, on stopping that the oil level was right down. oil pressure ok, engine light came on only going uphill. filled it with oil from a service station all fine, and he is looking forward to getting a new one in 35 weeks time.

Auction buyers, watch out for 51 reg black 1.6 focus. Has had no oil in engine.
