My neighbour's car has been involved in an accident and is likely to be written off. It's been transported to a yard today.

Can he get his personal registration off it and put it on retention?

How would he be able to put new plates on it with the substitute registration when effectively the car won't ever be on the road again?

Your advice would be appreciated, thyanks.

do it online www.personalisedvehicleregistration.service.gov.uk...p

Whilst the car will usually be reallocated it's original registration or a replacement by the sounds of things he won't actually be able/need to put physical plates on it & I doubt that DVLA would care (unless someone repairs it & puts it back on the road).

And make sure it is done before the MOT expires if that is imminent.

I assume (possibly incorrectly) that the car remains the property of the original owner until the insurance position is agreed. That being the case he can do what he wants with the registration.

Up to a point (Lord Copper).

In theory, the DVLA an require an inspection to confirm that the donor vehicle is roadworthy but this is unlikely if the car has been used recently.
