Following a Porsche into Cheltenham with the registration number M4 TOY then I noticed the car it was overtaking had the much more amusing number BJ 54 OMG .

Locally we have a KIA with TA57 YEV. Tasty it isn't but I guess you can't get ugly ev in a registration plate. I can see the appeal of a registration which is relevant to your name or business. Many years ago I spotted CHR 1S on a Rolls Royce (what else!).

We also have a Berlingo van locally with BE11 RUB. No idea what the business is.

That was on a VW Touareg for a while, and featured on one of the Police Interceptors episodes.

Someone in this neighbourhood owns FR05HAM. I presume he knows there should be 8 characters in the correct name, but that is a reasonable approximation.

The owner/MD of the SAAB dealership I worked for was absolutely obsessed with private reg numbers. They had just become a big thing, and on the day whichever the new 'letter' (this was 1990-1995) was released, he would have all the sales staff, one of the receptionists and one of the parts guys (and himself) constantly phoning the DVLA (presumably?) to get whichever SAAB themed numbers he wanted. When I started there, he had H1SAB, H11SAB, H111SAB, H15AAB, not to mention (my favourite) FLY900T on a 900 Turbo 16S demonstrator used by one of the sales. He also had AS66 and 66AS on two of his own cars (his name was Adrian Smith, presumably born in '66). But all the company vehicles, including the 1982 900GLE automatic we used as a runabout and the Vauxhall Midi van we got for parts deliveries had private plates. Probably 10 in all, but he also had on his wife's car and both parents, plus a couple of other plates which he owned, but let the two longest serving mechanics use on their cars.

I do remember preparing a new SAAB and making number plates with the initials KKK, wasn't long after I'd first seen the film Mississippi Burning!. Fortunately this was Aberdeen rather than the Deep South, but even so.

Also remember making up plates with the initials PMT, the owner was an elderly gentleman!.

A while ago I had customers who's name was Cumming. Their car had the initials CUM.............!

I apologise for my thickness and/or ignorance, but I haven't a clue what the missing letter is nor what the whole thing is supposed to mean.

And to honest, there are many personal plates that I just don't see the point of. "Reasonable approximations" don't seem to work for me.

I think it's supposed to be f***sham?

I'm not a great fan of personal plates either. I saw one on a Volvo S40 which was S40VOL . A few cm away from the nice chrome S40 that Mr. Volvo had seen fit to place on the back of the car. Why?

Not sure how they are made these days but when I made number plates at the SAAB dealer, I put the letters and numbers on the blank reflective panel rather like the old transfer decals you would get for scale models. Peel the protective layer off one side, apply to the blank and rub with a plastic tool carefully peeling back the remaining layer to leave the letter/number behind (then, carefully to avoid leaving bubbles, put that and the self adhesive clear acrylic plate through something like an old clothes mangle).

But with private plates becoming much more popular and people wanting the plate to read something specific, I often had to be creative, both with the spacing and to the extent of trimming various letters/numbers with scissors to make them look more like something else!

Souls coaches based in Olney have a selection of personalised plates. I've seen P5 OUL (which I'm surprised was issued) and I can't confirm R5 OUL, although it's alleged that's the initial of one of the family.

‘ I think it's supposed to be f***sham?’

Clues from another post lead me to suspect it’s meant to be f***sham.

Why does the swear filter get this? Doesn’t an engine have connecting rods?

We've been round this loop quite recently. Prizes for those who recognised the name of the small Cheshire town I live in - Fr0dsham.

It is necessary to use a zero to defeat the 'slur' filter, which I think was originally set to prevent people referring to F0rds as Fr0ds (with the letter O of course). An obsolete habit now, I think - or that may not be the true explanation. Anyone know better ?

And somewhere not far from here there is a drain-clearing company that has a fleet of vehicles ending in -PEE and -POO .....

One of the first 'occupational' ones I saw was back in the 70's on a Rolls Royce in Leeds (COM1C) - apparently it was Jimmy Tarbuck's. Anything that's a bit of fun and also contributes to HMG's funds (and thus my pension) gets my approval......

I'm hoping my 'investment' contribution of £399 to the DVLA for W12 AYE will add value to my rare Audi when it's eventually sold - unless a Scot with a Bentley makes me an offer I can't refuse!

Anyone with a personal plate is a B16 NOB

Doesn't exist. However, B14 NOB, somewhat appropriately, is on a BMW 428.

Sometimes it's difficult to tell whether these 'private' plates are personal (initials or name), occupational (M1NCE), descriptive (V8....) amusing (D1DDY), or just coincidentally memorable (most of them, e.g. my BBV 800V). Anyway, all part of rich western individualistic culture providing the opportunity for paying a bit more money to the government.

In the UK we are rather more limited for choice compared with the US, where (as one might expect) almost anything goes on your reg. plate so long as it's unique in your state.

Speaking of which reminds me of the time I flew into Cleveland (I think it was) and the driver of the bus to take us to the terminal said laconically 'there's no smoking allowed on this bus, but anything else goes ... '

My wife, who's maiden name started with the letter J always wanted the reg number SUE1J until I pointed out that it spelt "Sewage", she never forgave me for that.

Funnily, I saw that number plate on a car a couple of years ago, I had to smile.

Quite a few years ago I saw ORG45M advertised on one of the @utoTrader pages (it would have been an Aberdeen reg I think, BBD ?). It seems no-one bought it as it has no MoT record :-)

There we go again. It would never occur to me that SUE1J spells "sewage", because... it doesn't, not even close.

There was someone locally who had two cars which appeared to have the same personalised number, when they were actually [*** 555] and [*** 55S]

I see quite a few 'personal' reg numbers with uneven spacing and the fixing bolts in odd places to make one letter look like another. Of course this is illegal and should result in an MoT fail.

But any idea how much one with four numbers would sell for ?
