BMW 420i X-drive - Advice on options at the end of a business lease - Ex Alfa mail

My wife used to laugh when I turned to the collective wisdom of this forum for car advice but the breadth of views and, occasional, brilliant insight (!) has converted her. The problem is simple but emotion has crept into it. The car is a BMW 420i Gran Coupe with four wheel drive (one of the last with the elegant nose). It is now coming up for five years old and will have mileage comfortably below 40,000. It is used as a pool car for visiting clients when a less flashy car is needed or for when the weather is expected to be poor. It has been almost faultless, with none of the issues that annoyed me so much with the M4. In fact, it is a very popular car amongst us. Now, the preferred option was for an unrelated person to buy the car at the end of the lease and return it back to the business. But the purchase price asked by BCA is actaully higher than I expected, I would be able to buy an equivalent car from a main dealer for less (with the benefit of a warranty). The question is do I find a way to keep a five year old BMW, or look for a new car? What are the likely pitfalls with a five year old BMW? If a new car, then what? I thought of an Audi A5 (before the new model arrives) but I recall the driving experience as being tremendously dull. Some of you may recall that perceived image is an issue in my line of work (the merits of which I cannot alter). so that will limit some of the possible choices. Many thanks.

I think you might have answered the question yourself. If BCA is asking for more than the price of an Approved Used equivalent, then simply return the car to the lease co. and buy a cheaper car that has the BMW warranty.

My son bought an approved used 420i GC and the warranty is pretty watertight: a mysterious recurring 'check engine' light turned out to be a broken-up catalytic converter matrix. Took a couple of workshop visits to find the fault but it was handled without any quibbles.

The B48 engine design is getting on for 8 years old now and doesn't seem to have any major design flaws, it's certainly more robust than the previous N20 with its well-known camchain tensioner blade issues.

Although an equivalent secondhand car would have a warranty, you don't know how that particular car has been maintained, driven etc., whether its had an accident and been repaired or even if the previous keeper has had the mileage "corrected" to stay within a mileage limit on a lease/PCP deal.

Unless the price for an equivalent car is massively lower, I'd stick with the car with the known history, assuming that history is good....

I'm slightly unclear why you've mentioned BCA. Other people I know who've bought an end of lease car have dealt directly with the lease company, with the car physically remaining in their hands throughout. If the BCA price is allowing for the cost of collecting the car and putting it through their system as a private sale (which I think has a significant premium over a trade buyer) that might explain the higher price.

PCP & Lease purchase allow you to buy the car at the end of the 36/48 months.

A business lease does not allow the lessee to buy the car.

3rd party can buy the car but it will be at market rates today - not the balloon figure of the 3/4 year old paperwork

I would keep your 420 GC which you've had from new and a known, good car, serviced properly and sounds like it's had an easy life. As such I would expect years of decent service from it if you keep up with the maintenance. You've no idea how an alternative will have been driven. It did make me chuckle that this is a less posh car for situations that require it! My idea of a less posh car is somewhat different!! But yes, keep it, it's a good one!

Thank you for the insights. Very much appreciated. The way I was heading was to keep this car as I simply don't need anything newer or "better". Regarding BCA, I gather Alphabet (the BMW leasing arm) passes all requests straight to them. This is actually one of my preferred cars on our little fleet. It looks so much better than the more current BMWs and it is a lovely car to drive. We have all the settings in comfort mode and it is simply so relaxing for long journets. And yes Bazza, I do work in a somewhat rarefied world. I so wish my parents could see it. May I wish you a lovely weekend.

I had a similar dilemma when my company car 320d came to the end of its 3 year contract. The leasing company gave me a price right at the top end of the open market price range. This wad a few years ago and I have not regretted my decision to buy it. It was a known entity, and therefore so much less risk than anything off a forecourt, even a main dealer forecourt with BMW warranty.

I think the leasing companies are well aware of the situation and know they can price accordingly. They exist to maximise their returns and only to be expected really.

You do make the 420 gran coupe sound a nice car. Sooner or later my aging 320d will come to the end if its life, or will cost me if I want to drive it to certain places, so perhaps I should look at one of these. As you say, there are some used petrol ines around, tho I've not spotted your particular version at a main dealer. Main dealer is probably where I'd want to be with one of these, but you already have a known good one.

Thanks for that insight Sparrow. You are right on both counts. The 420i is close to an ideal car for me. The four wheel drive gives huge traction in adverse conditions and the hatchback provides a surprising amount of usable space. It was used in an office move and carried far more than any of us expected. Flattened the back seats, covered everything with a large tarpaulin, drove it back and forth all weekend and then simply vaccuumed it out at the end. The only wish I have is that I miss the feel and sound of a six cylinder petrol. Metallic grey, light leather interior, and it looks really elegant too. Far better than the 4 series that followed it. That large nostril look has simply not grown on me at all.
