Land Rover Discovery Sport - Broken electronic handbrake switch - Mal Partridge
Hi. Has anyone had experience of trying to get a repair on a broken electronic handbrake switch?
Mine snapped off unexpectedly. The replacement switch costs around £55 but it appears to be on back order everywhere. My warranty is covering it but currently my car is off the road, as the MOT has just lapsed & I am using a hire car arranged via the warranty. There is no sign of a part being available anytime soon. The part is available on eBay but it won’t cut the mustard as a genuine part. How long should I let this run it’s course? Could the car be written off because of this? Has anyone else had this issue? Any recommendations? Thank you.

Do you know the LR part no. e.g. LR071958? If yours is an older vehicle, try a breaker.

I’d buy one off free bay as a temporary measure. Somehow can’t think how your car would be a write off for a £55 switch.

I am hearing some stories about how JLR have outsourced parts to other companies such as Caterpillar. Manufactures for certain parts have gone out of business & JLR are unaware of what is going on. I could buy the plastic switch from eBay or look for a breaker but JLR would probably not accept it as it is not a ‘genuine’ replacement part. This could go on for months.

The part is available on eBay but it won’t cut the mustard as a genuine part.

As far as I can see all the ones on Ebay are genuine. Only one is new though, the rest are used.

Cant see why your buying a new genuine part would cause a problem for LR if they can't get you one, but what do I know?!.

No parts available. There was one in Saudi Arabia a few weeks ago apparently but somebody bought it before JLR UK could take it.

What is the part number? Genuine new are available on Rimmerbros, showing as in stock.
The dealership should have no issue fitting if it is in the box.

Thank you. I will have a look. I had fun & games trying to find a plastic part for the tow hook last year. Found it eventually but was much harder than I thought it should have been.

Medium to long term it’s worth considering changing vehicle.

The discovery sport is not a reliable vehicle to own and will likely need constant repairs

I wonder who makes the part? It seems ever JLR dealership has it on back order.

A quick update. After waiting for 2 months, I actually have my car back! The part turned up this week. Thanks to Marshalls Cheltenham for their support, shame on Land Rover for not having any parts like this in stock. Thank you to everyone for their suggestions.

Cost of fancy on/off switch.....£55 !!?? (loads for £25 on ebay etc) Cost of hire car for c. two months £2055???!!! Is motoring getting a bit like the aero industry where much money is made of replacement parts? Or are the manufacturers in cahoots with the hire car industry (the longer the hire car wheels turn, the better it is for them)?
