Vauxhall Astra - New DPF for Vauxhall Astra 2.0 CDTi - how much? - Richard_R

I have a thread in the Legal forum about a car I bought in Nov 2022 that had serious DPF issues within the first 3 weeks. I'm currently arguing with the dealer about getting a refund.

This thread isn't about whether I'll get one or not...I'm more curious about the cost to get a new DPF and fit it to the car. I spoke to a Vauxhall dealership and they said I'd be looking at £1800-2200. However I was told (by someone on here) to look at the CATS2U website, and have found one that will fit the car and which costs £445 (inc. VAT).

I want to know what the range of cost would be? I assume the Vauxhall dealer' quote is so much because they'd use a genuine Vauxhall part, and 'cos they're a dealer so always charge more.

The garage I bought the car off told me that they don't want it back because the cost to fix it would write it off, but it sounds as they they could get the right part of about £500 and fit it at cost (they can do the work themselves). The car is worth £4k (probably more once a new DPF is fitted). So I don't really buy their argument it would cost more to fix it than the car is worth, and I don't think the Vauxhall quote is value for money, given I can get the part of £445! Are the third party components any good or are they cheaper because they're actually rubbish?

Thoughts / opinions?

Firstly, you need to remember car makers don’t make every part of the car . They buy -in components and assemble them on the production line . Original equipment exhaust systems are made by another maker with the GM stamp on it . As with any parts , there are some very good aftermarket components that will do the job at a reduced price . However, in your case , I have a suspicion that the failure of the dpf is a result of another underlying issue , so fitting a new one might end up with the replacement failing .

I've just scanned the legal thread - oh dear you've bought someone else's previous problem probably offloaded to an auction. The problem is as well as having to fix the dpf problem (which could be sensors etc) the rest of the engine & turbo could(er probably will) be permanently damaged as diesel diluted sump oil doesn't make a good lubricant. The "low oil pressure" warning doesn't bode well. How old is the car / how many miles has it done? Don't throw more money at it.

However re the legal situation /small claims court the law is on your side :- www.theaa.com/car-buying/legal-rights

Make sure you document all exchanges with the dealer.

I was probably the one who recommended CATS2U.

For a bit of background I do a lot of Peugeot diagnostics and give people advice on repairs where they might have the tools and skill to undertake the repairs themselves, but would like a bit of expert advice and diagnostics on what might be wrong, without me having any vested interest as I don't do any work myself or recommend any garages.

Since around 2010 I've been recommending CATS2U when a DPF is end of life. The customer would buy the part, fit it themselves then come back to me so I can tell the car's ECU its had a new one fitted.

Out of all the ones I've done I've never had a customer come back to me with any issue.

I don't know if you've ever seen the TV show "Wheeler Dealers" but back when Edd was on he'd often talk about pattern parts not quite fitting and needing a bit of fettling to get right. But that was mainly for exhaust parts. I've bought a couple of cheap back boxes over the years that have needed a tap with the hammer to fit!

BUT, as elekie&a/c doctor says, this car may have other issues. The EGR valve will probably also need attention if its a diesel doing local miles. So, by all means you can trust CATS2U, but I would get professional advice on what other issues the car has before you buy a fairly expensive part.
